The ENWorld Gamer: What Kind of Gamer Are You?

Which of the following games did you play last month? (Check all that apply)

I kind of felt the same way. I associate board games like Agricola, Catan, and Carcassonne more closely with card games like Race for the Galaxy more than I'd associate them with Monopoly and Chess.
Yeah, I knew there would be a lot of overlap in some categories: most board games out there use a combination of cards, dice, and tokens. And none of them are consistent...Boggle uses special dice, Monopoly and Clue use special cards, Cribbage's "board" is an actual plank of wood, and so forth. 4E D&D has been called a board game, a dice game, and a card game in this forum, yet it is undeniably a tabletop RPG.

I don't want to add a category at this point, and I wouldn't know what to call it if I did. So for the rare case of hybrid games, I say: when in doubt, vote for the way you play it. If you play Catan like a board game, vote for board games. If you play it like a card game, vote for card games.

Results, two days in

So the poll is at 213 votes, and I'm poking around in the data and drawing some conclusions. Yes, I know it's a non-scientific poll. Yes, I know that makes my conclusions worthless. But this is the internet, after all...what can you do?

ABOUT THESE STATS

First thing I did was weed out the anonymous voters: while 213 people have voted in the poll, only 172 of those votes were from registered users that had logged in. (That means about 20% of the votes got thrown out.) Once that has been taken care of, the tally looks like this:

7.56% Arcade
54.07% Board
6.98% Card, collectable
27.33% Card, non-collectable
8.72% Card, gambling
55.23% Computer, non-rpg
45.93% Computer, solo rpg
20.93% Computer, MMORPG
27.91% Console, RPG
40.12% Console, non-RPG
4.65% Gambling, other
90.70% RPG, tabletop
20.35% RPG, Online
2.33% RPG, live-action
6.40% Sports, team
9.88% Sports, Non-team
0.58% Sports, motor
0.00% Warsim, Live
9.88% Warsim, tabletop
13.95% Warsim, computer
1.74% Nothing
1.16% Other RPG
2.33% Other non-RPG

Outlier (hi): Tabletop RPG
Outlier (lo): Warsim, Live

Then, I input all of the names and votes of everyone in the poll into an Excel spreadsheet, and did some fancy sorting and data comparison. Here are the results, for your entertainment.

JUST FOR FUN

If this poll is representative of all gamers, everywhere, all the time:*

# 94% of all board gamers are also tabletop RPG players.
# The ratio of electronic games to non-electronic games played is nearly 1:1.
# The ratio of indoor to outdoor games played is 22:1.
# Less than 7.25% of console gamers play sports of any kind.
# All collectable card gamers are also tabletop RPG players.
# 74.6% of all gamblers own a computer.
# If you play motor sports, you are the only one.

-----
(*It's not, by the way.)

I'll give this poll another couple of weeks, and then I'll run these numbers one more time. I also think it would be fun to do this survey again in the middle of the summer, and see how the results differ by season.

Tabletop RPGs.

Console Video games, mostly non RPG, but a bit or RPG gaming there too.

That's it. I don't gamble, play sports, play board games or play any kind of card games. I don't generally play games where there is a winner and loser (I never play multiplayer video games either - it's always solo, or couch co-op with the wife).

Oh. I didn't realize we were counting that as a game. Count me in for that too!
Interesting. That certainly is a different kind of roleplaying altogether, but I suppose it counts. Tabletop? Live action? Possibly MMORPG?

Ah, there it is. I found the line. Probably shouldn't cross it...

... and I happened to be dressed up like the Monopoly Man ....
My friend T had a combination Halloween/Housewarming party at the house he had just bought. Our mutual friend K came dressed as the Monopoly Man complete with hundreds (thousands?) of Monopoly dollar bills--he worked in a copy store and copied them himself.

We hid the Monopoly money all over T's new house.

It has been ten years, and T is still finding Monopoly money in strange, out-of-the-way places. :D

"War Simulation, Live Action" sounds to me like S.C.A. fighting. I used to do that but don't any more.

Oh. I didn't realize we were counting that as a game. Count me in for that too!

Say something mean innocent, and it gets taken the wrong way.... *sigh*

I tend to do that - I have a gamer wife, and we (no innuendo) game and video game together. So I'll make a comment and get a response, and think "Doh! I should have phrased that better"

Couch Co-op being a common video game phrase for non internet co-operative video games. Didn't even think of any innuendo from that. *sigh*

I'll claim paintball then , also some airsoft.

Otherwise:
Boardgames: Settlers of Catan, Samurai and Carcassonne
Cardgames, Non collectable: Munchkin
Computer Games: Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, Minesweeper (don't judge me)
RPG, Tabletop: D&D 4e
RPG, Online: D&D4e, Iron Heroes
Sports: Karate, Kobudo
War Simulation, Tabletop: Warhammer 40K, Anima: Tactics

Pets & Sidekicks
