You don't need a gender change to have that (great) conversation. Clearly. My point was not that they'd use the original backstory, but that the implied link between "saved my planet and my love" with gender was sexist weak-sauce. A female character could just as easily have that backstory.
Just like a woman character can have a romance with Alicia Masters. It is the 21st century. Same-sex couples happen. Not that they'll do that either - they won't touch that story in this context, so it is a non-issue.
The problem with the other origins is that they don't make a lot of sense in a world that didn't have Norrin as Surfer first.
With respect:
1) Given how much of a sausage-fest the film would be otherwise, I'd be okay with the change just for purposes of representation.
2) There's a great deal more to telling a story than the character's history prior to the action we are seeing.
Heck, in the original comics, the Surfer turns on Galactus due to Alicia Masters. Having that conversation - on the value of life - between two women, would alone be worth the change.
Serious question. I don't keep up on the news as much as I did.Are you joking or are you seriously asking?
Oh, got it …Serious question. I don't keep up on the news as much as I did.
That’s actually what some folks in the know are saying might be the case …I wish it had been something done Frankie Raye (Nova) instead of what they are doing.
not a gender swap, different character - and in a different universeAnd given that the Surfer was one of my favorite Marvel characters and I have been wanting to see him in the MCU, I will now be skipping the movie based on the unnecessary gender swap.
The searches that I have done have stated that it will be the Shalla-Bal Silver Surfer played by Julia Garner. That’s actually what some folks in the know are saying might be the case …
None of us know a damn thing about how they're handling her story in the upcoming movie so you should probably chill out.Explain why you'd choose to replace a female Marvel character's existing backstory with the backstory of the male version of that character instead of going with the Marvel existing version of that backstory for that character. I'd like to hear why you find that to be a compelling practice, and why you think that's a good idea in the context of an accusation of something being "sexist weak-sauce."
So functionally they're not actually using the Surfer in a way fans of the character would recognize as supposed yo be the same person.not a gender swap, different character - and in a different universe
