The fantasy lit tradition -- what came right after Tolkien?

Edgar Rice Burroughs - While John Carter and Tarzan pre-date The Hobbit and are really pulp there are a number of fantasy elements in them. ERB wrote a vast number books during the 20, 30, 40 and into the 50s.

The Jungle Book was wrote in the 20's.

Don't forget Dr. Suess, now that is fantasy!

The media was changing over to radio, movies and TV during that time, you have shows like The Shadow, The Lone Ranger, Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers that took your readers away.

LeGuin I would say so. Alexander...not sure. Yes the Black Caladron series was kind of epic. But realistically, it was just a water down Magnabonin(sp). LeGuin at least try to be original. Tolkien might have drawn on old Icelandic and other traditions but he made his own mythos in the process. Alexander just made up great characters and some good plots but it was essential just a rewrite.
Nah, you're selling him pretty short. It uses some of the same characters as the Mabinogian (sp?) but it's not at all the same story/stories. Have you ever read the Mabinogian? Arawn isn't even a Dark Lord of any kind, for instance...

Looking at the timeline I completely forgot about Clifford Simak, how I enjoyed his stories, I wonder why we have not seen his stuff re-printed.

Go to SciFan and look at the yearly releases link at the bottom of the page. Genre lit from 1900 to 2002. Also you can look up the dates and publication order of various series.

Claiming that Alexander too closely followed The Mabinogion is

A) Inaccurate -- the Mabinogion isn't a story, first off -- it's a collection of stories that don't have anything to do with each other. Alexander certainly took elements from it (names, mostly, it seems to me), but to say that it's a reproduction is untrue.

B) Rather beside the point, isn't it? I mean, even if all he did WAS rewrite the Mabinogion, he'd still be somebody publishing fantasy soon after Tolkien, right?

Or am I missing the point of this thread?
