The five-room dungeon

These work wonderfully, although I don't necessarily follow that formula. I don't particularly care for running long dungeon crawls, so I like to keep them short and focused.

It originated in a John Four article for Dragon/Dungeon magazine, I foget the issue.

and this is why I WANT MY MAGS BACK!

sorry, Yeah I love that he kept going with those making more and more 5 room dungeons.

I wish there would have been a d20 pdf book of them.

I don't know where it originated, but I came across it at the same place. I've put the principles into use once or twice for relatively short one-shot type adventures, and they worked great!

I'm just considering the idea of the Five-Room dungeon, as described here:

Where did the idea originate? Was it in Johnn Four's newsletter? Or was it somewhere else?

Could someone help me?

Cheers!
This is great! thanks for the link. I apparently have been following this advice for years without realizing it. It was great to see it codified like this. Helps focus what I really love about the little dungeons.

Thanks again,
Bill

Yeah, it's from a dungeon mag, about four years ago. And it's GREAT advice. In fact, there's a lot of neat stuff in that link. Gonna have to read it when I get home.

I keep Five Room dungeon in mind any time the PCs enter a place, and it's wonderful in play. It's also great to "link" several five room dungeons together, to create one big dungeon complex. It's a great way to get your larger dungeons to stay "fresh" over several sessions.

It's not surprising. Johnn is a really good DM with excellent roleplaying knowledge. I highly recommend his site for anyone looking to improve their knowledge of gaming. (He's got a good gaming setup in his basement too.)

Thanks for the feedback. I was touching on the idea of the 5-room dungeon in an article I was writing on Tailored Encounters, contrasting them with the megadungeon and the balance issues they have. :)

Cheers!
