The Funniest TV Series EVER is finally Coming to DVD!

You obviously haven't been watching Garth Marenghi's Darkpace! Check it out on the Sci-Fi channel, tomorrow evening sometime....

Well, after watching 10 minutes of this, I have to say, eh. It's a nice attempt, but they try to hard to be funny. And as a result, really aren't, just stupid. They should have watched Police Squad to understand how to do a parody that's actually funny.

Police Squad I don't know much about. I did love the Naked Gun movies, though.

If you liked them for the slapstick humor and Leslie Nielson mugging for the camera you'll be disapointed. The TV series is played very straight and deadpan, very much like things were in Airplane!. Also, like in Airplane! the show is extremely dense with gags and little bits in the corner of the screen. You actually need to be paying attention and some of the funniest bits are not necessarily immediately obvious, until you've watched a number of the epsiodes and it finally dawns on you what the shtick or cliche is that they were making fun of.

In some respects it probably isn't a bad thing that the series didn't last too many episodes as I really can't imagine how they could have sustained the level of the humor and satire. Which come to think of it, they didn't in the movies.

It was indeed funny, but not the funniest ever. That honour goes to either Fawlty Towers or Blackadder. Can't decide which!

I never liked Fawlty Towers for some reason. I've tried watching it, but it just doesn't work for me. Which is odd. Blackadder looses out because of the first season. Rowan Atkinson is a lot funnier as a snide, arrogant, callous, manipulator than as a cowardly, snivelling, incompetent.

In truth, the first 3 episodes were much better than the two which aired last night.

Here's to hoping that the DVD includes the unaired opening to episode six. The show began each week with "Special Guest Star" plug at the end of opening credits where they would the show that celeb getting killed in some way and not seen again that episode. For the last one they filmed a segment with John Belushi as the guest star, but then he died a few days before it was to air so they reshot that bit with somebody else. While I agree that it would have been in very bad taste to have aired the bit at the time it really would be nice if John Belushi's final acting performance could be seen.

That's a fascinating tidbit. I did not know that. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that's going to be included from the Amazon description, but it is still 3 months until the release.

Edit: According to IMDB they wanted to air that during a re-run of the series in the '90s, but could not locate the footage.
