It is hard to look back at Whedon's work from 20 years ago and not see the fedora tipping that is there. Not all of it, by any means. But enough that it makes me shake my head at younger me.

I mean, the way Mal talks to Inara in Firefly, what the serious F? And, even though I felt it was pretty mean spirited, I just told myself "It's Whedon. Clearly he was setting it up for Mal to realise what a doosh he's being. If only it had had more time."

Nope. More time was not what Whedon needed.

Yeah, those scenes make Firefly a hard rewatch for me, since Inara is nothing but a huge benefit to the crew of the Serenity. Mal -- a former soldier* and current criminal -- deciding to shame her for her lucrative and legal profession is just gross.

* I'm the son of a combat veteran and am not down on the military by any means, but the odds are very high that Mal has done a lot of stuff that he's not proud of, as hinted at repeatedly in the series.

Ah well, if it's lucrative, I guess you're right that no ethical judgement should ever be imposed.

He's not making an ethical judgement. He's making a moral one.

And there's no information given as to what his exact problem is -- he's not religious and it doesn't seem like the general society has an issue with it. It really comes off as toxic jealousy.

Mal is Whedon's self-insert and I think the implicit argument is that if hot women aren't having sex with him, they're bad people.

Lucrative, legal AND highly respected, in their culture. Mal's judgment of her was way out of the norm, in retrospect.

I should also mention that it's even more cringe worthy, when you hear what Inara's ultimate fate was. IIRC it was talked about in the reunion doc.

EDIT - Yup, it's in there. "Firefly: Browncoats Unite" between 29 minutes and 33 minutes.

ayayay - I first thought its only about her terminal illness, whats the big deal? Than the actors fantasized about their fates and I wanted to stop - but than saw here that you specifically said to 33 minutes. Oopsie. That was a big cringe moment holy naughty word. Sounds like the fantasy of an edgy 13 year old.
