Here in the United States, it's a colloquial expression that simply means, "Don't do anything that might cause problems in the place you depend on to earn a living."

I'm adding The Good Place to my list of shows with a good ending. It was sad which I thought very fitting for a show about what happens to people when they die. Sort of. The show was really about how we should live our lives.

It has been a while since I watched Firefly, but going off memory, in the episode with the sword fight, Inara and Mal are talking because Inara was confused about why he reacted the way he did, after all he always insulted her, and his reply was that he never insulted her only her profession. The impression that I had was that he was violently opposed to people selling themselves to earn a living. Even if it was socially respected and legal. Just because something is socially acceptable and legal, does not make it morally correct.

His problem was with the profession and that it was respected and legal was just another reason to hate the Alliance.

Which ... I call BS on Mal. But also primarily on Joss, because this was just ickily done. I'll admit it's been a minute, but what I remember of Mal's jibes at Inara is that that is splitting a hair and still calling it a gross word for a sex worker. Also, the episodes themselves never sold the world building that Inara was of a higher station than the rest of the crew, so the concept was never executed properly ... which given what I now know of Joss makes a lot of sense.

That said, I do think Serenity was a solid ending to the series, but I've long given up my browncoat.

It seemed pretty clear to me that companions at least rubbed shoulders (and I'm not making the obvious joke here) with the upper crust. Plus Inara's mannerisms, clothing, and dialogued marked her as being higher class than Mal and the rest of the crew. This was in sharp contrast to the prostitutes working the house of ill repute we saw in one episode. It's been a while, but I think that particular place was run by a friend of Inara's, a former companion herself, and it was seen as a step down. Maybe if we got more than one season we might have seen more of an exploration of what being a companion was all about, but it did look like there were hierarchies in the sex business just as there are today.
