Or Serj Tankian?
If I’m counting right 9 of the 13 are US movie/TV actors of the last 50 years, mainly with fairly mediocre moustaches compared to some really epic historical ones. It’s more a “what American movie star do I like?” poll.Seems more like a "greatest mustaches of the 20th and 21st centuries (belonging to non-dictators)" poll to me.

You didn't ask for "the most well known moustache", you asked for "the greatest moustaches of history".Fair point. But what makes a mustache "great" or "iconic" anyway? Is it just the size of the 'stache, or is it the popularity? the recognizabiity? the image it conjures in the mind?
If someone says, "the fellow had a mustache like Freddy Mercury," a lot of folks will nod in understanding... but if someone said "he had a mustache like Ruggero Leoncavallo," most folks would say "...who?" Now, Ruggero had a truly excellent mustache, maybe one of the best... but unless your audience is familiar with photographs of 19th century composers, that phrase doesn't land.
Yep! And I'm arguing that popularity can be a measure of greatness. You didn't ask for "the most well known moustache", you asked for "the greatest moustaches of history".![]()
