Why oh why did WotC have Crapapple provide the illustration? There are a stack of good artists and a cool critter like this needs proper treatment!

How tough are the D&D Grues anyway?
Well, they could kill the average adventurer, wizard, or Stellar Patrol Ensign Seventh Class in one turn. Pretty tough, I'd say.

But a fully kitted-out high-leveled Peasant in Beyond Zork could take three of 'em down in about 9-10 hits, so apparently if the parser allows for fighting and you've spent some time getting good at it, they're not invincible. Mind you, the ur-grue is worse. Takes direct sunlight to take care of one o' those.

Really, though, the smart thing to do is to keep your brass lantern (or frotzed item) handy, because they abhor the light. Grue repellent will work for a couple of turns, but it wears off, so it's really for emergency use only.

And I'd guess that they have lousy eyesight and aren't very clever, since it's possible to sneak into a grue convention with a cheesy disguise and get away with it for a few turns. Something about not being able to lurk or slaver convincingly enough, I suppose.

you can snavig yourself into a grue and slaver and lurk very well, though

To be fair, its one of his better works (Although the composition is strange... are those... pixie skulls...? And ...why are elemental creatures casually roaming along the pleasant countryside...? It's like having a scene of a vrock taking a nap along the bank of a river like he was Huck Finn.). Not saying much, but at it's at least -servicable-.
