The Horror Beneath

The Horror Beneath, what an appropriate thing to put on the cover of this module.

What the module lacks in originality, it makes up for in nothing. It's not original in the least, but this doesn't bother me. I'm kind of new to the hobby (okay, really new) and this module reminds me too much of Caves of Shadow. It's just as standard, normal, and plain as can be. Everything about it is utterly plain... at first glance.

The stats are wrong, there are conflicts and errors everywhere, and I seriously think my beagle has better English grammar skills than the entire staff of Nightshift Games. An erroneous comma is one thing (one thing which I've come to tolerate from gaming material), but nobody proofread any of this stuff. What's going on?

I could go on about how much I hate the writing (because it's what I hate the most), but the only correct way to review this module is consideration of the need it fills: a plain module.

That said, it is as plain and normal a module as can be. It's good (sort of) for hack'n'slash games and the like, but don't expect quality RPG material here.

I didn't give this module a 3 (average) because ratings of 3 have to merit at least SOMETHING original or good. I don't give it a 1 because it's not completely awful. A 2 is a very appropriate rating, I think. Keep in mind that my expectations were low.

I still plan on using it (I have a little brother; he and his friends ought to get some bashing out of their systems before I lift the veil on roleplaying to them), but I would never pay list price for this module knowing what it was like.

I paid $2 for it, which is on the low end of fair.
