The Jade Frontier, part 2 (DM: THB, Judge: Lord Sessadore)

Sword in hand, Miranna began to make her way east, towards the source of the whispering. She moved slowly and cautiously, more concerned with whatever might be in the sarcophagi than with whoever was whispering- at least for now.

The group rounds the corner and sees that the glow originates from in front of a door on the far side of the room. It appears that there are two alcoves on either side of the door, but you cannot see their contents from your current position.

As Miranna passes the center sarcophagi, each of the stone coffins erupts in purple flame. The fire gives off little light and no heat, but from each pyre steps a ghostly soldier, each clad in antiquated armor. Eight of the specters wear simple armor and wield spears, while the two emerging from the easternmost sarcophagi have ornate plate and massive swords. In unison, every ghost pivots to face the intruders.

The two large shadows raise their swords at Miranna in a challenge and charge. They swing their blades at the swordmage, but she is more than capable of evading them.

The rest of the shades quickly converge upon the group, stabbing with spectral spears. Yishim and Firete manage to avoid the press of the ghosts, but the others are not as lucky.

All of this happens in perfect silence.

They go first.

Shadow Legionnaire 62 charges Miranna and misses with a 14.

Legionnaire 94 will attempt the same, but misses even harder, despite charging into a flanking position.

Ghostly Conscript 10 charges Chey, banking south to avoid an OA, and hits. Conscript 16 moves to AJ,-16 to attack Miranna and misses. Conscript 17 attacks Brenwar and hits. Conscript 18 charges Yishim and misses. Each hit does 4 damage. Rolls.

Conscript 19 attacks Brenwar and misses. Conscript 55 attacks Yishim and misses. Conscript 80 attacks Firete and misses. Conscript 96 attacks Miranna and hits. Each hit does 4 damage. Rolls. The last two attacks in the roll have modifiers they shouldn't have gotten because I forgot to remove them. The correction was taken into account when determining their accuracy.

I'm giving you more monster information this time. Also, when dealing with both insubstantial and vuln/resists, you apply the vuln/resist first, then halve the damage.[/sblock]

Miranna had been expecting something, but not exactly this. With a startled his, she set her feet and spun her blade through a wide looping cut- and arc of rippling force blurred the air behind the blade. Lightning arced around one of the stronger specters, and some of the weaker ones simply evaporated, leaving a space for her to step back towards the rest of the group.

OOC:

The sudden silent onslaught startles Cheysuli so much that she squeals a little. "You will rejoin the cycle soon old one!" She hisses at one of the nearest spectres.
Energy flows eagerly to the point of Chey's rod, adding power to the point-blank eldritch blast that she releases in the spirit's face. In such close quarters however, the spirit easily sees the attack coming and fades out for a moment to avoid the blast. Once the warlock's energy is expended the ghost re-materialises and stabs at her face, managing to draw blood which runs down the girls face as she staggers backward.

Firete immediately freezes in place on seeing all the ghosts rise from the sarcophagi. By all the gods, I have never seen anything so ghastly. She raises her hands, and notices Yishim is in the path of her spell. Yishim, take cover! This room needs to be cleared! Brlliant white light converges from her fingertips, blasting the ghosts and filling the area in front of her with fire. Yishim was unable to dodge the blast but stayed on his feet.

[sblock=Actions]Standard: Blazing Starfall on AL,-6. Targets GCs 80, 18, 10 and poor Yishim in that order. :( Rolls, I suspect that fries everyone including Yishim (sorry! :() for 7 damage[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC] How is your hp? If it's down more than you like I can spare a minor action for a heal.
I have a pdf of my character sheet I can send you, Two Heads.[/sblock]

Surprised at the sudden appearance of the undead Brenwar takes a blow. He shrugs it off and moves toward Miranna. He quickly levels a hammer blow through the undead shadow, however it fades away before the blow does anything to it. It quickly reappears in the same place as Brenwar asks Palladys for assistance.

OOC: Brenwar beat me to the post so I have to retcon this.
Yishim, not expecting the attack from behind, turns to attack the undead all around him - only to see them all fall to Firete's attack. Well, you can't argue with results, Firete. Nice job.

In typical Yishim fashion, he rushes into the fray alongside Miranna, and right in front of one of the undead. A clap of thunderous energy flings the creatures backwards - except the one in front of Yishim. Didn't expect that... Yishim takes a place behind Brenwar, and directs an icy blast to the many creatures which remain.

Minor: Is it a minor to arcana check the sarcophagi? 1d20+9=25
Move: to AL, -4-5
Standard: Thunderwave Icy Terrain on AK,-2 Misses GC96, Hits the rest for 4 damage due to insubstantial. Push these two to AK and AL, -1 Both SLs are prone and entire area is difficult terrain[/sblock]
[sblock=OOC]I'm fine, Katana. Nice rolls. 2Heads, I don't actually have my character sheet anymore - old computer died and I was hoping to re-do the whole thing once I leveled up. Yishim'll become an illusionist. I'm going entirely off memory & my stat block as it stands. I can recreate the thing, but am hoping I don't have to as many aspects will change.[/sblock]

[sblock=Actions]Minor: Firete draws her sword[/sblock]

As she draws her sword, she sees Yishim move away. Careful Yishim, the flames!

[sblock=Blazing Starfall] That's 1 fire damage because you moved. And the zone extends to -6 starting from where you were, AK,-6 to AM, -6. The only way you will avoid that damage is if you don't move until my next turn.[/sblock]

[sblock=Blazing Starfall]Actually, it only deals the secondary damage if you have the Cosmic Magic class feature. So Yishim is safe, not that the one damage was that dangerous to him in the first place.[/sblock]

[sblock=Character sheets]I actually have all of your sheets in the Character Builder. Really I'd just like you to include your defenses in your posts so I can quickly tell whether attacks hit or not.

And yeah, Rapida, I can't get links into my sig anymore either.[/sblock]

[sblock=Arcana]Each of the sarcophagi has been turned into, basically, a very small gate to the Shadowfell. Then are designed to pull particular creatures from that shadowy plane and bind them to this location. Once activated, the gates will continue disgorging undead until whatever condition set upon their creation is met. Destroying the coffins should also disrupt the gates. However, the sarcophagi are massive and made of stone. It would take a very long time to destroy one, let alone all ten.[/sblock]

Two of the fires flare up as more combatants emerge from them.

The two larger shadows right themselves. One moves to meet Miranna's challenge, while the other drifts into the wall. It reappears near Firete and Chey, its grim visage completely passive.

The other shades continue their attacks, this time to no avail.

Conscripts 27 and 31 join the fight. 27 comes from the westernmost sarcophagus and 31 from the second from the right on the bottom.

Legionnaire 62 stands and moves adjacent to Miranna.

Legionnaire 94 stands and phases through the walls to appear at AJ,-6.

Conscript 27 moves to AK,-2. Conscript 31 moves to AM,-7 and charges Firete, predictably missing. Conscript 96 reminds me why I need to stop targeting Brenwar's AC. Rolls.[/sblock]
