The Knight Thread

I think the Knight is pretty well done. Its a nice alternative to the Paladin.

I even made a Warforged Knight cause I thought it would be an interesting character. His name is (corny I know) "Challenger".

Among some of the things I like are:
At last another class with a D12 Hit Dice.
At last a class that protect an ally, since the Devoted Defender was never revised
At last a class with a emphasis on weapon & shield. with the new shield feats, this is great!

Having looked over the knight in the preview, I would say it's definately quite an interesting concept.

Also, the people who don't like the use of CR in abilities which is understandable, the only place CR comes in is the opponent is a worthy challenge or not and not in any actual resolution of the ability (save wise, etc.). A DM could ad-hoc this with little to no problem.

The Loyal Beyond Death ability screams knight fighting to the bitter end.

I really want to play one.
 

I think it suffers from swashbuckler syndrome. Abilities either do not give enough of a bonus or work only in very specific, uncommon situations.

The idea seems to be of a tank in combat.

d12 hp : Smart move.

Now the confusing part is when we start looking at the class abilities. If one were to make a tank, logically speaking, bonuses for using a shield and some form of DR is the way to go. The latter isnt there....the former's bonuses are far too small to make much difference from a standard fighter with tower shield.

You can get to direct an enemy to attack you, which is a good thing if you are tanking, but the knight doesnt really tank that much better than a fighter...and a fighter is assured of significantly higher damage.

The mounted combat tree is nearly useless in oh...at least 95% games.....due to the whole issue with having a horse running around indoors, which happens quite frequently.

The idea is sound, but the game mechanics fall short.
 

The player that was running a mounted fighter in my Red Hand of Doom Campaign decided he liked the Knight so I let him switch his character over. He was playing a "knightly" character already so I said yes.

He used him in the last game and he worked out well, he got to use a few of his abilities and seemed to really enjoy him.

He was able to use his mounted feats and was able to protect a henchman from death using his abilities.
 

This is the idela class to multiclass into from paladin, or to go from this TO paladin. since multiclassing out of knight does not have the same restriction as multiclassing from paladin.
 

CR-based mechanic: really bad.
Bad Fort save: bad.
Defensive abilities, feat trees: good.
"How to draw aggro without really trying:" really good.
Code of conduct with mechanical penalties other than losing all abilities: really, really good.

Overall, a very good class marred by some iffy mechanics, but certainly worthy of inclusion.
 

I'm not sure why the bad Fort save is such a hindrance. The character is probably going to be high Con, and has access to Great Fortitude as a bonus feat. This guy's more focused on the defensive, so the high will save allows for them to not be dominated by a bunch of mind attacks. At least it makes them a bit different than a standard fighter, in that they won't be feared/commanded/charmed as easily.

I love the Knight.

I really like the challenges and the code of the knight, and the tactical options it allows. I like the feel of it.

All I would add is 4+INT skill points with at least Diplomacy and Sense Motive as Class Skills.
 

I think the class is mostly ok except the name. "Defender" or something like that would have been better.

Hmmmm... Knight/dwarven defender...
 

I think the Knight fills a nice niche.

Knight's challenge - excellent, and needed, given the lack of offensive superiority, some characters will be frustrated by that, although it seems more "involved" than it may need to be, particulary where it trumps some "roleplaying" components

Knight's Code - Ok, now I'm impressed. Putting not just "roleplaying" limitations on a knight, but eliminating or limiting their combat effectiveness in the name of honor. Well done Mr. Noonan (and team).

The class seems a nice blend of defenses, great HP and endurance, some cool teamwork abilities, mounted combat, and some mundane combat effectiveness.
