Well, the Lightning Rod also has two good saves, a better combat progression, and better hit dice than any spellcaster. I had intended it to also be taken by druids, and that's the impression I wanted to give. Most of his abilities are good for physical combat.
With that emphasis in mind, too much spellcasting could seriously overpower the class. Adding evasion in (which fits nicely) might also preclude more spellcasting.
However, if I were to grant spellcasting at 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th, in addition to Evasion at level 8, how would that look balance-wise?
