The magic system of the new LOFR RPG...

First Post
For those who came here for spoilers sorry to disappoint. I haven't got any. I was just wondering. It has to be a low mana system right? There are very few wizards (should they be allowed to be PC's?) and very few magic itens. Do you think that it will be a lo mana game, though, with all the marketing issues? And if not, do you still think it can be good? I'm very curious to see how that will come out but not very excited about not being a low mana, IMHO it can turn into something very similar to D&D, and if it did than i don't really see the point... just wondering how you guys feel about it.

Do you mean the Lord of the Rings RPG?

If so, I can tell you this: It is NOT a mana based system.

Instead, for each spell you cast, you make a Weariness roll (something like a Fort save). If you fail the roll, you gain a level of Weariness.

In DnD terms, you make a Fort save for each spell cast, if you fail your save, you take subdual damage.

If by chance you DON'T mean the LoTR RPG, then ignore the above post.

Yeah that was what I meant. So, judging by that it shoul be hard to cast spells. That's a good beggining. Do you know if the player characters can be spell casters straight from creation?

Yup.

You start off as a Magician, if you want to be a spell caster. From what I can tell, they are the LoTR equivalent of the DnD Adept.

If you want to continue with the spellcasting, then take up the Advanced Order (basically a Prestige Class) of Wizard.

Wizard is the equivalent of Gandalf. Magician is sort of like an aprentice wizard.

What is the reasoning behind the existence of those wizards?

Are they Maia like Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast?

And what is their power level compared to the rest of the group? Can a warrior type actually go to an adventure with a wizard and expect to be useful?

Is there any restriction on the use of magical powers?

Just curious.

As far as I can tell,

All the Orders have Advanced Orders.

Wizard is to Magician as Knight or Ranger is to Warrior, Bard is to Minstrel...

You get the idea. Wizards I think are like Gandalf, but with the "Angel-Factor" removed.

So, yes, a Wizard will outshine a Warrior.

However, if the Warrior becomes a Knight, a Ranger, or a Noble as his advanced order, he is then on even footing with the Wizard.

Just as a Knight or Ranger will outshine a Magician.
