The Miniatures and Editions Connection

Do you USUALLY use miniatures to help with combat, and what game do you usually play?

Not really an option to describe my play experience, in both of the 3.5 games we're playing we use minatures for some combats and not for others, in the 4th ed games we've used minatures for all the combats but in the one shot I'll be running I'm going to go for combat with and without minatures.

So when its appropriate I suppose is my answer.

4e with grid and miniatures (or, rather, cardboard markers). We started using tokens of some kind extensively with 3.0; before that, we played AD&D without minis, but the DM used to draw round-by-round battle maps on graph paper, with positions and terrain features.

I started using miniatures because of the suggestions given in the BD&D and AD&D1 rule books. So I've used miniatures with BD&D, AD&D1, AD&D2, D&D3, D&D3.5, and with several other non-D&D RPGs.

I didn't answer your poll because saying I use minis with my current game suggests that I use minis only with my current choice of game, and that's not the whole picture. I've always used minis with D&D because (aside from AD&D2) D&D has always suggested or assumed the use of minis.

I started buying miniatures before I knew there was a game to use them in. I just liked them. I have always used miniatures from my first red box Basic D&D set (circa 1981) to my 4E games today. To me they are as needed as paper and pencil.

I started to use miniatures in 2e Darksun since it was difficult to place people within an arena where there are races and battle of various kinds all taking place at once.

Even when I stopped playing for a bit I continued to buy and paint figures. Then came 3x and I have not looked back since.

No 4e for me however.

I was just wondering if people could break down whether or not they usually used miniatures in their combats and tell us what game they usually played. by original dnd i meant all boxed set, basic, expert, etc, as well as the older original old school stuff. by usually play i mean more than any other game, and by usually use miniatures in combat, i mean more than 50% of the time.

this is my first poll. enjoy.

Miniatures and terrain when I have the space, with Original D&D and AD&D.

Currently playing 3.5 and 4E, with minis and a mat.

Have been playing since 1E in 1982...with minis and a mat / map.

The rules are more supportive of using a mat these days (obviously), but it's something that we've always done anyway.

My groups started using minis during the 3.X stage. I never used minis prior to that.
I can't imagine playing 4e without minis though. And, truth be told, I am so used to minis since we started using them in 3.X that it would probably be wierd going back and not using them for battles.

Well, I messed that one up good. Assuming that it was a multiple choice poll I clicked on all that applied and hit vote. THEN realized my mistake. I should have actually read the post first, then I would have voted for 1E.

Sorry to the OP for not reading.
