I've always used miniatures for D&D games that I DM, all the way back to 1E. I had a case full of old Ral Partha miniatures in various stages and qualities of painting and I still use metal miniatures to this day (although my painting skills have improved by leaps and bounds and I mostly buy Dark Heaven metal now).
When 3E came out, I definitely noticed a trend toward DMs using miniatures, especially when the plastic D&D miniatures came out. I saw alot of DMs before that handwave tactical positioning in 1E and 2E, but I can't imagine anyone playing 4E without using minis.
