the most common non-magic magic items

Celebrim,

I have also seen chimes of instant guard summoning for when an unscrupulous PC decided to jump the gem merchant.

As a DM, I have also seen Maps of Ridiculously Wrong Scale.

There was one island in a ravenloft module that measured three miles across the long way, but it had three full cities in it plus a ruined fourth city and vast jungles and rice paddy fields in between. The description for the ruined city said "The ruins of the city extend for miles from the temple, but the jungle has overgrown most of it."

Miles.

My in game explanation was it was an illusionary lie of the Rakshasa lord Arijani.

Each of the PCs in my game has somehow picked up a ring of tactical timeliness that does not take up a ring slot, does not show up on a character sheet, and that I can't remember handing out.

This ring allows any player character to warp time so that a normal 6 second round lasts as long as the slowest player needs to calculate his next action. This way the sorcerer can weigh the relative merits of several spells and the rogue can figure the exact route across the battle map to avoid AoOs and still flank the maximum number of foes.

I have had to resort to the time honored, "If you don't decide right now, you lose your action." I am thinking of getting an egg timer of absolute decision duration to defeat the rings.

My favorites:

The Eternal Writ of Legal Immunity : "No see, I don't have to turn my weapons in at the gate. ... Yes, I can wear my +5 bastard sword of evil tyrant slaying in the king's presence. ..."

The Periapt of Universal Skill : "+15 in any skill I don't have recorded on my spell sheet."

And the Periapt's close cousin The Scarab of Infallible Skill: "What do you know? I just made the DC..."

The Ring of Interdimensional Evasion: "I managed to evade the fireball - I take half/no damage. - But you're in a 10x10 foot room."

How about Inica's Spontaneously Changing Clothing...suitable for any weather, Inica's magical attire instantly changes from leather bikini top, short skirt (you know... Xena attire) and sandles, to long pants, long sleeve shirt, heavy wool lined boots and winter over cloak at the first sign of cold weather, you never have a need to buy extra traveling clothes and add weight to your pack with these travel beauties!!

Actually that is not a mage-only item, or did you ever see a barbarian charge 5' short of his enemy?

Not really a problem in my game, as whenever someone 'charges' 5' short, it's assumed that he finishes moving up to the enemy, but instead of charging he simply used a full round to run x4 up to him.

"I charge the bloodthirsty orc..." (moves mini) "Dah, ok, I run x4 at the bloodthirsty orc..."
