The most important question of all

If and when WotC comes out with 5E, does 4E get thrown into the Legacy Forum? And will there be a revolt from pre-4E Legacy Forumites, who want their own non-4E forum? Or will 5E be so heinously "not real D&D" that even 4E will be accepted by the most vociferous of anti-4Editionists?

Maybe WotC needs to come out with a fake 5E that does away with the most classic and precious tropes and replaces everything with World of Warcraftisms, merely to unite the fractured D&D community. It is like that scene in Willow when the creepy hydra-like creature grows out of goblin goo and Madmartigan runs away from it, only to find himself fleeing with his enemies. For a brief moment they are united against a greater evil, but then reality returns and they are at their squabbling again.

To paraphrase William Butler Yeats, "What rough beast slouches towards Renton to be born?"

There is no question more important than this one.

Quick Answer: by definition it gets thrown in the legacy forum kicking and screaming, regardless of whether that forum's denizens like it or not. Let there be much gnashing of teeth.

Regardless of how nasty a beast 5e may be, I find it difficult to believe that ANYTHING will unite the 3/4 divide against it. It will be a case of both groups running away from it (but perhaps with the 3e bunch safe in the knowledge that the 4e mob can't run as fast). :p

What I would love to see is the pendulum swing back (Essentials perhaps being the key here) providing us with an eventual 5e that unites the divided like a ray of pure sunshine down from the heavens. Let it be a Nymph that unites the masses rather than a Hydra that ultimates divides and divides and divides and...

My guess is that the collected gnashing of teeth and self-flagellation will reach a critical mass and then

THE INTERNET ITSELF WILL SPLIT IN TWAIN;
AND AS FROM AN EGG
WITH A SHELL OF WRETCHED NIGHTMARES
AND A YOLK OF PUREST VOID,
THARIZDUN ITSELF
WILL EMERGE AND CONSUME
ALL THAT IS,
ALL THAT WAS,
AND ALL THAT EVER SHALL BE.

Voila! No more edition warz! That is all.

Since the New Red Box truly is the heir of Holmes D&D, 5e will therefore be Mentzer D&D reborn, with an Advanced D&D version published later on to renew the sales, since Wizards will have pointedly pointed out that "there will be no 5.5".

The Cycle will be complete. The world will come to an end. We are all doomed.

To the OP: the simplest and easiest answer on 5e's release would be just to chuck 4e *and* 5e straight into the Legacy forum and get it over with; in advance preparation for 6e...

By the time 5e releases next year, Hasbro will have finally developed their memory adjustment technology, and will use it to erase all knowledge of previous editions. As such, the Legacy Editions forum will be a rather quiet place.

5e Rocks! You 4e folks are all bad/wrong/nofun.

I just wanted to get that in ahead of time. I seem to like the odd numbered versions of D&D best (1e, 3e), so I do look forward to 5e and cannot wait to throw these 4e guys into D&Ds edition trash bin.

I'm hoping for a 2d20 approach - roll two and take the best result. That would be coooool. Oh, and bring back THAC0!

If and when WotC comes out with 5E, does 4E get thrown into the Legacy Forum? And will there be a revolt from pre-4E Legacy Forumites, who want their own non-4E forum?

The serious answer to this question is that it will depend on traffic. The staff here is quite skilled at paying attention to what happens in the various forums, and creating new pages when one topic starts to take over a forum. Likewise, old forums are merged together when traffic drops too low.

There will be no revolts. If there's enough people in favor of 4e having its own forum to stay separate from the rest of legacy, it will stay separate. If there's not enough posting to warrant it, it will get merged in; but then there won't be enough angry people to cause a revolt.
