The DMG back blurb makes it look to me that WOTC wants Doormat DMs trained to stroke player's egos.

I don't know about you, but at the end of every session, I stand up, spread my arms and shout, "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?"

Seriously, it's not about stroking egos, it's about having fun. and that's the responsibility of everyone at the table.

Not really. "Entertain And Inspire Your Players!" is there to reassure said players and perhaps suggest they buy the DMG to their DM as a gift. Any experienced DMs really reads that sentence as "Ensnare And Torture Your Players!".
