The University of Planet finishes researching Threshold of Transcendence and builds Voice of Planet, but the Stepdaughters of Gaia pre-empt them and finish the Ascent to Transcendence secret project first, winning the ga-er, movie.
Yep, that's pretty much exactly what sprung to mind when I watched this.

They even kept the mostly-inhospitable atmosphere from Planet.

The Navi also remind me a bit of the "dream apes" from Greg Egan's excellent Diaspora. It'd be amusing if they were the self-reengineered remnants of a transcendent race.

The exact same sentence could be applied to Quenya and LotR.

Heck, both LotR and Avatar are also similar in that they are both re-packaging older source material for a new audience. LotR has better source material, granted, but the parallel is there.
