That puts it somewhat into another light, altho I still think, that direct combat isn't appropriate. A paladin - at least - should first try more peaceful methods or at least try to arrest the druidess or something along those lines.

Arrest? On what charges? For what offense? If he can't attack an evil creature for being evil, how can he arrest her for being evil?

Or should he say, "Well, even though she sets off my Evil Alarm, she hasn't made move against us. We have no proof she has committed any Evil acts, other than the fact she detects as Evil. Let's just shake and go home. Maybe eventually she'll do something Evil that I can witness. Then we'll come back and stomp her good."

Quas, I've also responded in your other thread on whether a paladin can smite someone that he detects as evil. Basically, I'm of the view that a paladin who has detected evil on a creature should neither ignore it or start attacking immediately. Rather, he should first try to find out what it has done to have "earned" its evil aura, and what further evil it may be planning. Once he has establised whatever facts he can, he is then free to decide whether to attack it, arrest it, redeem it, or run to warn others and get reinforcements. Of course, if the evil creature attacks him first, he's got every right to defend himself.
