Newxpress,
Thought I'd toss an idea out there for you to consider.
In the tradition of Heracles' Nemian lion-skin armor that nothing could cut, Odysseus' bow no other man could string, the shield of Perseus, and the spear of Ajax, amazing equipment are a part of the myths. Below are some optional equipment rules from the Black Company Setting. They allow better equipment, that is still mundane, to be introduced, and often have really neat effects that would fit well in this type of campaign. Thought you might like to consider allowing or assigning us one special bit of equipment. But by all means feel free to say no, it isn't a big deal, it is just a cool idea I like in low-magic setttings.

[sblock]
Black Company Equipment Rules

• Accurate: +1 to hit (any weapon)
• Balanced: +1 to initiative when readied (any weapon or shield)
• Concealable: +4 to sleight of hand checks with this item (any item)
• Crushing: Inflicts an additional 2 points of non-lethal damage on successful hit (any blunt weapon)
• Deadly: Increases the threat range of any x2 weapon by 1 (any weapon)
• Decorative: Gain +1 to diplomacy checks while displaying item (any item)
• Fortified: 10% of any critical hit or sneak attack damage being negated (any armor)
• Guard: Wielder may reduce attack rolls by 1 for an entire round gains deflection bonus to AC of +1. This deflection bonus is doubled if the item is a shield. (any weapon or shield)
• Light: Item is 10% lighter than normal (any item)
• Mastercraft: Reduces armor check penalty by 1, to a minimum of 0 (armor or shield)
• Rugged: Item gains +2 to hardness and break DC (any item)
• Sharp: +1 to damage - bonus applied before multipliers (slashing/piercing weapons)
• Sturdy: 50% increase in item hit points (any item)
• Thick: A suit of medium or heavy armor provides damage reduction of 1/- against physical attacks - this DR is applied prior to any Damage Conversion (any armor)
• Threatening: Wielder gains +2 to intimidate checks when displaying item (any item)
• Well-Crafted: Provides a +1 bonus to a specific skill when used as intended (any item)

There are six levels of Masterwork items:
• Fine: 1 benefit
• Excellent: 2 benefits
• Exceptional: 3 benefits, may double once (ie, one double, one single benefit)
• Superior: 4 benefits, may double once
• Masterwork: 5 benefits, may double twice or triple once
• Masterpiece: 6 benefits, may double twice or double once/triple once
[/sblock]

I like this, let me mull this over. But having unique property items that are not (rules wise) magical is cool. What are the costs of the masterwork levels?

I would like no one to take magic items at chargen. I again apologize for being erratic in the info. Magic items will be available but they will be far fewer in frequency. Materials soemtimes in loot more often from dead monsters will allow PC for create items and equipment with the Hellenic Alchemy feat or from a crafter NPC who does.

Cool, I now believe we are five?

Just read your addition concerning languages.

I had planned on having Mantikas (Mantikos?) speak (Minoan) Greek and Egyptian, not because I expected to ever use it in-game, but simply because it matches the character's background. Still okay?
Got a bit lost above, so I'm qouting myself to make sure if this would be okay. :)

Another question: Since we are bit limited in potential class choices, would you consider using variant classes from UA? (Since I got the feeling that, despite their common barbarian level, Blackrat's Aeaxeos and my Mantikas are not really much alike and this could be used to differentiate them more.)

I might have been confusing you can take bonus languages if your INT allows, they probably wont come in too handy but if its part of your character of course do it.

Ive been thinking about variants as well. I promise to recapitulate all this info into a more coherent manner for everyone but here ( and my apologies to Milhouse for not thinking of this earlier) :

The following UA variant classes are allowed:

The Totem barbarian variants- Jaguar the standard babarian is referred to as Panther (the symbol of Dionysus) for completness sake :)

The Thug Fighter variant

The wilderness Rogue variant (again sorry milhouse)

Feel free to tweak and or change concepts as you wish- no hurry. I will try to reorganize all this into a new opening post. Thanks for everyones input I really like constructive (as oppposed to twink-ish) suggestions.

Thanks! Really no confusion regarding INT bonus languages; I just wanted to make sure it's okay to take Egyptian at all. (And if it never sees any use, no problem at all. It's just part of his background. :) )

I would probably use the Bear totem following the old Cretan Chronicles gamebooks (anybody still remember those?) where Minos is more than once characterized as "bear-like" and even calls himself "the Bear" once or twice.

One comment regarding the Thug variant fighter: Since ordinary fighters already lose the heavy armor prof, a Thug should probably lose the light armor as well (leading into the remark in New Argonauts that many duelists fight naked) or not have access to the replacement feat Combat Expertise.

Read your consept Douane, nice. I'm predicting wrestling competitions between Mantikos and Aeaxeos :D. Maybe we should establish a friendly competition on who kills more beasts ;)?
Thanks!

I'm rather looking forward to those matches, the two seem to make an interesting pair. :) (Hopefully the wrestling won't degenerate into a rage-fest!) Mantikos doesn't really care about his number of killed anythings but then, having fewer kills than somebody else is just another form of losing, right? ;)

BTW, sorry for stepping on your toes with the barbarian level but since the number of classes is limited and the ranger is out, barbarian was the only other choice for some diversion as rogue just doesn't fit Mantikos.

Nah, I don't feel like you're stepping on my toes the least. As you said the classes are so limited that this can't be avoided ;) . Besides, I have a feeling we are going to make very different characters even if their class/levels are the same. As you said you are going to go with power-attack, high damage dealing kind. I on the other hand plan to make more of a brawler/fighter who can use his fists as well as weapons and consentrate on mobility too.

Ok Ive closed recruiting. I consolidated the game info in the first post in this thread. I await your character ideas.

Fenris if you could let me know the cost of the levels of masterwork equipment I'd like to include it in the game. Ive never seen the Black Company rpg but heard good things about the rules.

Thanks all!
