The New Classics

Perhaps the classics of 2nd edition wasn't as much adventure modules as it was campaign settings. I would love a 3E take on Dark Sun for instance, and in 10 years time I would probably consider that world "a classic".

Except that you forget, a huge part of D&D's player base learned on 1e, and then left by 2e. I had stopped playing a couple of years prior to 2nd editions arrival. One of my friends at college bought the 2e PHB, and we all perused it, and then went and played GURPS Fantasy. FOR TWELVE YEARS.

Holy Guacamole! That sounds almost identical to my experience. When I joined the army, 2e came out shortly after. My friends and I bought the 2e Player's Handbook, were DISGUSTED by it, threw it away and played GURPS fantasy...FOR TWELVE YEARS! HA!

I'm so glad 3e is cool, I really missed D&D!

The big winners were Sunless, RttToEE, Freeport, and OSM. All but OSM had some detractors.
Well, I'll detract from it. It isn't a classic. It can never be a classic. Isn't it out of print already. I'll be if we leave ENWorld and enter a FLGS and ask random RPGers: 1) Do you play 3rd ed D&D? 2) Do you think Of Sound Mind will be fondly remembered as a classic 3rd ed module? That second question will get far "Never heard of it" responses than "yes" or "no" combined.

Freeport will fare better than OSM simple because GR has release 5 or 6 books in the freeport series. Sunless might get the most responses. RttToEE is just too damn long to be a classic.

Just MHO,
Joe

Based on the responses Of Sound Mind is the consensus best 3e module out there.

Wheee! Although the population here may be somewhat prejudiced, since I didn't make any secret of the fact that I wrote it. If you guys liked it, tell people! I'm all about a sleeper hit. :D

I'm currently playing in it, and I find it to be freaky as heck.
Hopefully, that's a good thing. It's just going to get worse, too. How far along are you? Of Sound Mind 2 is due at the publisher early next year. It's looking good so far.

My favorite 2e modules included Bruce Cordell's Gates of Firestorm Peak, and Planescape's Harbinger House. both were superb. The problem is that a module is made classic by the number of people who played it, not necessarily by its quality.

Which doesn't contradict the poll or anything said here. All that poll showed was, in the limited opinion of the ENworld folks, what modules were classics. Of those suggested, only one had no one state any dissatisfaction with it, namely OSM. That doesn't make it a classic, quite true, but that's not what he said. You're not detracting from it, you're just saying it wasn't exposed widely enough to be considered a classic. That may well be true...but that's no reflection on the module, which is what he was saying.

It's print status is irrelevant to the question, though, IMHO.

I'm right at the beginning. It's a PBeM, which makes it a bit slow (tho this game seems to move a little faster than the ones I run), but adds a bit to the RP and descriptions. I'm looking forward to lots of good freakiness (and yeah, it's a good thing).

I started the last thread because I was shopping, and wanted to know what I shouldn't miss. I had heard good things about OSM, and I heard it was going out of print, and I wanted to know what else to get.

So I bought OSM (thank god I was too busy to read it!), RttToEE, and the Freeport series.

And Joe can you take a deep breath or two? :D I think you need to relax a little!
