This topic is highly-charged and I apologize for starting the thread. I'm amazed at how many people who didn't see the movie feel the need to make a post trashing the movie.

I haven't seen it and I'm not trashing it. My main reason for not seeing it is the fact that it's subtitled, and I find it difficult to watch subtitled films.

What's the point in seeing it? I mean, you already know how the movie ends. And then they bring the guy back to life. C'mon Hollywood, you can do better than that! :)
Don't like stories you know the ending to and people being brought back from the dead? Man, you must have hated LotR then :D

Jokes aside, I heard that The Passion got a G rating in Italy. The Headline News segment also said that Hannibal got a G rating too. I know that sounds crazy, but I'm pretty sure that's what it said.

But is a "G" ratings in Italy the same as a "G" rating in the US?

I haven't seen the movie yet. I'll probably wait until it hits DVD just because I have other movies I want to see that are a higher priority and limited time available (still have to see Hellboy and Hidalgo).
But I eventually want to see it some time. I happen to think that we need more controversial films (as well as controversial television and radio) than we typically have. Too much complacency makes us intellectually lazy.

Or is all this a philosophy self-servingly contrived to get more sex on television? You be the judge!

The film was originally meant not to have subtitles. Its meant to be a very artistic film, where the visual images tell the whole story.

...we have letters for ratings, too?

The "official" rating AFAIK is the age you need to be to watch the movie (14, 18, or any). I haven't heard of any restrictions on Passion, though this doesn't mean that there aren't. The 14 is handed in a semi-random fashion among movies that feature some degree of violence or sex. The 18 is automatically used for pornography, but not much else. Overall, it's an unreliable system that everyone ignores.

Then there is the system used for rentals, which again uses age but is more flexible and just a guideline, not a law. And again, thoroughly ignored.

Then there is a system used for broadcasts on major networks, which uses colors (green/yellow/red) and is somewhat more reliable and again only a self-regulation thing. Red means something that would probably get a 14 at the cinema (stuff that would get an 18 doesn't get onto major networks, of course).

But I have no clue as to what "G" means.
