the portal opens, would you go through?

I would go to Eberron and be a journalist. And on the side write fantasy stories about our world. Or adapt a lot of movies, Shakespeare plays, books, etc. from our world to Eberron.

I also would go if I had a chance to enter the Traveller universe.

Well, I think I could like going into the 24th "Startrek" century - there is a RPG for it, right? :)
Most of the problems of the fantasy settings don`t apply there - it is safe, clean, and I bet I could get familiar with the technology. (And I would have the chance to learn, since my story would be plausible - after some dedicated scientific research). I don`t know who I would take with me - my parents or sisters might be only vaguely interested - some of my friends might be willing to go.
The only disadvantage is the war against the Dominion, but if I enter the world after the end of the war, everything is fine - if I appear somewhere before (or even before the borg threat), I might be able to warn the federation/starfleet. (well, maybe I shouldn´t warn them about the first attack - very specific circumstances were needed to counter that...)

Otherwise, I would probably prefer the Shadowrun Universe above most D&D settings, just going from the rules - if my ability scores lack in D&D, there is not much I can do about it - in Shadowrun, I could improve them.

I'd probably go, although I haven't got a wife and kids, so I'd take my brother and my uncle.

As for money, I wouldn't worry about inventing big things like aircraft. There are plenty of usefull little things that could be made with medieval technology but weren't AFAIK: paper clips for instance.

For a dayjob, I'd probably be an architect. I could design houses for the rich (and myself) much more comfortable than the norm. And I could call myself and architect, and stop keep having to explain what an architectural technologist is to everyone I meet.

Of course, that would only be to support me until I'd learnt the craft of wizardry. My Int probably isn't as high as I'd like to think, but it is certainly well above average, so I'd expect at least firs and second level spells to be within my grasp.

Oh yeah: where to go?

Obviously the [EDIT: Next Gen] Star Trek universe would be pleasant, if that is an option. Is Riesa still there or did it get done over during the duminion war?

If it had to be a D&D world, Faerun would be my choice. Probably based in Waterdeep, if I didn't find it too cold: lots of money to be made there.

Mmmmmm. Go back in time to Star Wars about a day before the blockade of Naboo. Talk to queen Amidala, explain the reason behind the trade federation is senator Palpatine himself. Talk to the Jedi on Coruscant explaining the persona of the Sith lord Darth Sidious/Palpatine. Be rewarded, learn about the force (how else would I know). Get Amidala to love me. Go to Tatooine and by two random slaves. . . say Shmi n Anikan. I'll train him to become my greatest weapon of the force. Move in to clean house at the senate. Oooooooooooo. I feel a lot of Dark Force points piling up:)

Well, 3 years ago I would have jumped through without a second thought, going to Fearun and becoming a cleric of mystra (as surely the voice could only be her).
Today, I have a nearly two year old son and my wife's pregnant with a second child. No way would I go through, no way with 'em (unless mystra tells me we're all her chosen, there would be a small probability) and even less probably without 'em.
Oh, and I wouldn't like to be 15 years old again...

Greetings

I'd go, but only if I knew what my stats would be (and my family's stats, too). And if I heard what my stats "really" are, well, then I might not go. ;)

I've got a pretty good grasp of my natural stats. If a Remove Disease is part of the deal, I'm around average Strength and a bit over average Dexterity. Somewhat weak Con. Without the Remove Disease, I still have my mental stats. They're probably not as obscenely high as I tend to credit myself with, but they're still high enough that I could do a passable job as a Psion or Wizard.

My big stumbling block is going alone.

Hmm, thinking about it (and assuming the Startrek Universe is not allowed), being in Eberron and becoming a Magewright might be a way to go. Not a real good spellcaster, but at least having something useful and not so common as, well, being commoner - and probably a bit more "intellectual" challenging then farming...
