The Price of RPGs: You think the US is bad...

First Post
I spent Easter with my academic advisor for my studies in Japan. In addition to being a very classy lady, her grown son is interested in roleplaying games.

This is fairly rare, since kids are encouraged to specialize in one thing and devote all their attention to it, usually toward clubs or sports. That, and the price.

In addition to AD&D (2e)'s PHB and DMG (not the black bordered, the print run with the full color picture covers--PHB with the man wearing a winged helmet), Sword World, a novel by Steve Jackson, and some Japanese RPGs (including Ashura Fantasy Basic and Expert Sets and a Trading Roleplaying Game, yikes!), there was a {edit} Swedish {/edit} RPG named EON in a very well-taken care of boxd set.

What is very special about this boxed set is how heavy it is. It is entirely packed with books, all of which were bought separately. It contained the {edit} religion sourcebook {/edit}, the main rulebook, a monster book, and {edit] a couple I don't know what, exactly, they were (maybe a worldbook and a wilderness survival guide?) {/edit} (I think, Swedish is about as understandable to me as Korean). The main rulebook had no price on it, but the rest of them did.

Each book had a large white pricetag. Two were 16.900, two were 17.900, both prices in yen. Using a 100 yen to a dollar conversion, that's far too many dollars. Each. Plus the main rulebook. :uhoh: Makes me feel better about D&D's prices, myself...

Granted, this is a Swedish imported RPG in Japan, land of high prices, but I wouldn't've gotten into the hobby had it been that expensive. The V:tM book is 5000 yen, and I've heard the 3.0 books (no 3.5 here as far as I've seen) are slightly more expensive.

He also had the complete compliation of Famicom Rokki/NES Rocky, but that's a different subject entirely.

To keep this more related to the subject line... What's the most expensive RPG book you've seen, in the US or not?

Epic Level Handbook.
The thing is nearly worthless as far as resources go, and it costs 50 euros. I have browsed it a couple of times in my local bookstore, but I really can't see where the extraordinarily large price-tag comes from.

Your average hardcover costs between 30 - 40 euros, so ELH is way over the top. The softcovers (mostly resourcebooks) cost around 18 - 25 euros and are filled with good stuff, so I mainly buy those these day. And there is also the fact that there are only so many hardcovers to buy that I would actually find use for.

Are you telling that PHB 3.0 is sold 500 US$ ????

I mean: if it's the case, I am gonna sell (and won't be the only one hey!) my 3.0 rulebooks on ebay.japan to buy 3.5 at the normal price in normal places! (It happens that I wish to buy the new Psi-PHB but only if I can sell the 3.0 version of it)

Since people can buy stuff at Amazon.com at competitive price (see another thread on DL for 15.98$ ;) ), maybe there is harsh regulations rules for buying foreign products in Japan?

Any Japanese gamer here at Enworld?? (It seems to me I noticed one, once...)

Werewolf: the Apocalypse collector's edition rulebook cost €75 at our FLGS. That's around $90. In the area of normal print versions, the B5 core book by Mongoose clocked in at €60, i.e. $72.

The prices have dropped since then, though, when they recalculated them a while back.

What's sad is that, outside the U.S., it's cheaper to order books from Amazon.com and pay for the shipping than buy them in the LGS (if there are any nearby at any rate). I got the three core 3.5 rulebooks from Amazon for about 70 euros (shipping included), and they would have cost me 105 euros in the store over here. And the store got them about two months after I received my copies from Amazon.

Price in France are tolerable, but yes, it's almost a straight conversion from dollar to euro (. Recently I wanted to buy Medieval Player Manual on amazon: with 30% reduction and shipping costs, it would cost me around 23-25$ (base price without reduction nor shipping costs is 22.95$). Finally I decided to buy here in the store (I didn't want to wait), and got it for 21 euros.

And I noticed my mistake while reading the post about rpg in Japan. Finally, i won't try to sell on ebay.japan :(
