The Return of the Game in a Box!

There was a time when fantasy role-playing games came in boxes.

Then it was decided that this was not economically feasible, and games came in books.

Oh sure, you still had the occasional "starter set" or high end supplement. But these were not really free-standing games.

Until now.

The new War Hammer. Dragon Age. D&D Essentials.

The box is back!

Apparently. . . (it came from RPGnet)

The Lord of the Rings RPG, from Cubicle 7, will be a box set as well! :)

I'll try to find some confirmation worth its bandwidth, but hey, it sounds promising (to me.)

There's something magical about boxed sets. They're bulky, probably an inefficient use of space, and likely cost more to ship, but they feel really, really nice to have in one's collection. Or to start one's collection.

The diversity opened up in what they can pack in there is great too.

I too am thrilled for "The Return of the Box." I would also imagine that the technology to make boxes has improved since the old days.

Many, many things come in boxes, not the least being board games. Since those have always come in boxes, it makes one wonder why RPGs ever stopped. I don't think it's an economy of scale thing, as plenty of niche products (I'm looking at you Albedo: The Roleplaying Game) used to come in boxes. Does it really come down to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons uses books, ergo all serious games use books?

Quite honestly, I'm floored that Hasbro didn't insist on a Dungeons & Dragons boxed game sooner. Maybe it took them this long to realize that you can put a more complete game in a box.

Viva la box!

Cubicle 7 released the Doctor Who RPG as a boxed set.

I picked up the Gamemastery Treasure Chest from Paizo. It's one of the sturdiest built boxes I have ever seen. It's filled with card sets, a campaign workbook, an adventure and a flip map. Just so cool.

I love the boxed set. The original intro boxed set from WotC for 4e wasn't what I had in mind for a boxed set. What kind of boxes are there for some of these new sets?

Is the Doctor Who box like a box that a motherboard would come in? Or more like the old redbox .... box.

I don't mind, mind, just I saw a review and I wasn't sure if that was the box it shipped in.

The two 3.5 basic boxes from WotC and the starter set box were really great boxes. I have all three and still use them to store things.
