The Return of the Grell?

Patriarchs were huge and immobile however they could imbed their tentacles into object (including ships) and animate them - hence Grell Spell Jammers

Grelljammers? :p

I think this is great- grell are a fantastic old-skool monster, one of my favorites, and that full page illo in the 1e Fiend Folio- man!! What a freaky picture to see when the dm says "This is what you're fighting."

As with almost all classic D&D monsters, the grell were better in Spelljammer. :D

Any return of 'jammer content to 3.x is welcome, and I look forward to seeing the grell in all their aberrant glory once again. I wonder if the beholders will also get their incredibly wicked (both in the sense of evil and in the sense of cool) Spelljammer kin restored to them.

For Night Below, I figured I'd use grells with class levels for the higher castes. The big immobile spellcaster would be a custom job, though, probably with additional monster HD and size.

I like grell. Good to hear there's more on them coming out.

I've crossed these guys with gelatinous cubes. I call them "Grello."

Seriously, these guys are one of my favorite monsters. I'm glad WotC is giving them some lovin'.

Why is it that the most ridiculous monsters (grell, flumph, etc) from old editions inspire such love?

I swear, in another 15 years, I'm starting a petition to bring back the phantom fungus.
