The Scarab

Tchikkatlikkit steadies the craft and turns the ship slowly around in a circle. Then he lets the ship steady again. The Diana hangs motionless.

Below you, is sand, but from your vantage point in the sky, you can easily see the beginnings of a range of drab greenish trees- and amazingly- what looks like a small village.

"..brrxx... That way.. clk. is north..."
Tchikkatlikkit points with one hand and both antennae to the direction he has indicated. Then, he climbs deftly around the railing where the wheel is joins you at the railing.

"..zzrrk. only made this trip once before.. clkkk..clikkaclikkaclikka...that is Kezz. Small village. about a mile?clik. not allowing the formians... "

Tchikkatlikkit hands Khulmbanos a slightly oily spyglass and points east. In the distance, there are three black winged shapes, moving quickly through the sky towards your ship.

"..thinks.. clkk.. we have.. company?"

Osric looks with interest at the black shapes heading towards the ship.

"Just in case." He says as he loads his crossbow. "Any idea as to what those critters might be?" He asks Tchikkatlikkit.
 

The flying creatures are closing fast- at this point you can see them as drab sand-colored humanoids- about goblin-sized (although hard to tell without letting them get too close). They are approaching the Diana on membranous batlike wings. They carry clutches of javelins in their feet.

One of them hurls a javelin at the ship and it falls 50 yards short, easily. It screeches horribly and the group seems to double their speed.

"clkkk...not knowing..! but assumed hostile!"

Tchikkatlikkit backs away from the railing and scuttles to the foredeck.

Note from GM: This is essentially a free round for the players, because the creatures are too far away to do anything but charge forward this round. They fly 50' (poor) and they'll be able to close the distance to 100' at the end of the round.
The deck railing provides 25% cover.
 




Khulmbanos peers through the spyglass, trying to work out what the beasties are. His free hand unstraps his crossbow. As the creatures approach, he idly slips the spyglass inside his shirt, then loads and aims the crossbow. He'll fire when they get within range.

"Ashan's right - make sure the buggers don't get to Tchwhatsit or the wheel!"

Osric kneels down behind the deck railing and shoots at the closest creature. He reloads quickly, readying himself for his next shot.

"Friendly locals they have here." He says drily. "We done anything to upset 'em, or are they just touchy?"
 


There is a sudden burst of activity on the deck as the group returns fire on the savage creatures charging the ship. Casandra, Osric and Ashan launch a volley of missiles- all of which fall short. Riss takes careful aim at one of the creatures and lets one of his black arrows fly- it pierces the beasts thigh. Khulmbanos steadies his aim on the wounded one, waiting for it to come closer. Just a little closer...

And they keep coming- they split off in three directions, but they are still charging. At this distance you can hear their raspy screeches and see their contorted, angry faces.

Casandra, Osric, Ashan and Riss reload and steady their weapons for another volley. Khulmbanos lowers the crosshairs of his crossbow on the throat of the wounded one.
Missiles fly again- this time- the volley seems to find it's mark. Casandra and Khulmbanos fire their bolts into the wounded creature, which seems to stop it in a violent mid air contortion.

The first attacker drops from the sky.

The second beast sputters and falls limp soon afterwards, with Osric's bolt protruding from it's heart, and Ashan's arrow impaled in it's ribs.

Hremelan's sling bullet and a second black fletched arrow from Riss find their mark on the third attacker, but the thing keeps swooping closer. At 50' it launches it's javelin with seemingly deadly aim.

You watch in horror as the javelin flies directly at the cringing halfling.. and then bounces harmlessly away atthe last second.

The shield spell may have saved his life.

Casandra, Khulmbanos and Osric scramble to reload and hit the beast now that has come so close. Their bolts slash the air- but the creature is too fast, sweeping one bolt aside and dodging the other two. It is wounded now, and begins looking for escape- perhaps by flying under the craft.

Ashan hooks one leg over the railing and leans into his final shot. He has to make it count. With a muffled thwip! sound, the arrow finds it's way into the throat of the last attacker.

Everyone stands around panting for a moment, and Khulmbanos quickly takes out the spyglass again to look for more.

As quickly as it began, it ended.

In a combat encounter; I'll normally run two rounds at once to speed things up. (in this case I ran three). If you wish to change your basic activity between rounds, please just post two-three rounds worth of plans, and we'll try and extrapolate from there. (and you can interrupt me and change your plans if we haven't gotten to that round yet). I am assuming here that Hremelan will attempt to use his sling the second round after his shield is up. I had Khulmbanos hold his attack until they closed to 100'

Once I post an initiative check, I'll wait until either everyone has posted their actions or 24 hours have passed.

Creatures AC is 14. HP are 13, 15, 10.
