I pretty much always use a screen, especially to hide die rolls. Keeping my rolls a secret from the players a powerful DM too IMO. I don't want the players to know anything unless I want them to. I like the separation between the players and the DM. It's much easier to evoke fear of the unknown in the players when you have a screen.

I stand up a lot when I DM so I don't feel the screen gets in the way.

I never use a screen (though I tried it in my 2e days), also I role out in the open (except for special rolls, like, oh I don't know, no I really can't think of a reason to hide the role).

So, I was just wondering if I am the only one here that doesn't bother with a DM's screen. Sure, I will make a joke here and there about what we do behind the screen:uhoh: , But how many of us actually use a screen.

Normally, I never used a DM's screen. When I started to run my D&D 3.5 game (I normally don't run D&D, either), my players demanded that I use a screen as part of the authentic D&D experience.

I can't stand sitting behind a screen. It stops me from seeing the players as much as it hides my private things.
I keep all my notes in a notebook and roll on my lap. Sometimes I use my laptop for descriptions & campaign tracking, but mostly I use it for music.

eh. I mix and match styles.

How many of you actually have players that care about how "authentic" their game is. My game is never really like that. A lot of the rules are fudged, and half of them go down the drain.

I always use a screen, but I don't always roll behind it. It's a good way to have notes ready without players seeing them.

I use a screen all of the time. I try to keep it out of the way and off to the side, but sometimes the room available to me is not there. I do use it to hide rolls, notes and maps. I also use a laptop which I try to keep to the other side of me. There I use DM Genie to track combat, notes for what is going on and easy access to the SRD.
