The Size of Eberron

It's either 1 or 2. The book mentions that Sarlona is to the east and west of Khorvaire.

Also, it's not really that tiny - 16,000 miles is roughly 2/3 of Earth's circumference, and slightly bigger than Mars (Earth = 1, Eberron = 0.64, Mars = 0.53).

2/3 the size!!! So it must have a weaker gravity. Does this mean I need to give all my players +5 physics bonus to their Jump checks.

It may or may not have a weaker gravity, depending on what's inside; gravity is determined by an object's mass and it would be higher if Eberron had a larger metallic core, heavier elements in the mantle, or a lot of other things.

Also, I see this thing called 'the Barren Sea'; maybe it's like our Pacific Ocean only more barren and they just didn't want to show all that bare blank space?

That is true no matter how big or small the planet is. Pittsburgh is both west and east of New York City since you can travel east from NYC and eventually end up in Pittsburgh.

My problem with the map is that wash lines in the ocean don't meet on two edges of the map. If those lines are supposed to mean something, they should line up.

Yeah good point. They either don't mean anything and are just there to look pretty and not logical or the layout artists had to crop off a chunk of the edges of the map to make it fit into the layout.

Over in the Q&A thread, I believe Hellcow (Keith Baker) confirmed that the endpaper maps do show Eberron in its entirety. My guess would be that the swooping lines are there to convey the idea of currents, or something similar, but that they don't really mean much.

The book mentions Sarlona humans migrating to live in the western regions of Khorvaire. The Shadow Marshes are probably just a hop skip and a jump eastward across the channel from Sarlona.

jmucchiello's point was that the swooping lines on the left and right side of the map that are there to convey the idea of currents do not match up. If you line up the right side of the map with the left side of the map they should match up.

In my opinion this means part of the left and right side of the original artwork was cropped off so it would fit in the confines of a 16" space. Not that that affects anything its just an observation.

Hey, at least you had a scale to work with. When I wanted to find out how big the Britannia of the Ultima CRPGs is, I got answers ranging from thousands of miles across, to tens....

What I was getting at was that based on Hellcow's comment, I didn't think the map had been cropped. You guessed that the mismatched lines meant the map was cropped, or the lines were just there for effect -- I agree with your second guess. :)

After careful study of the maps, I can conclude it is one foot across, and fits comfortably on a simple tea-towel.

Or was that Amn?

There are other RPG worlds that seem suspiciously small. Birthright's continent always seemed a wee bit titchy, but that may be because it went only from the arctic to, at best, just barely into the sub-topical bands.

On the other hand, Midnight's continent is far too massive.
