The Size of Eberron

Well, the map is obviously cropped at the north and south, so the distance between equator and poles is at least 5000 miles, which would make the circumference not less than 20,000 miles (Earth 25,000). This also means at least 4000 miles of east-west expanse were cropped.
All that is of course only true if Eberron is a sphere.

...and this makes the Barren Sea at least 9000 miles wide. (Pacific Ocean 6500 miles between Japan and California)
That's some big ocean to cross!

If Eberron-the-planet is 2/3 the size of Earth, but with a similar gravity, then it must be much richer than Earth in metals. At least for heavy metals, like gold, lead, adamantine...

And given how the typical D&D country (including its local dragons' hoards) possesses more gold in coinage than the sum total of all gold ever mined on Earth, that seems logical.

All together now

It's either 1 or 2. The book mentions that Sarlona is to the east and west of Khorvaire.

Also, it's not really that tiny - 16,000 miles is roughly 2/3 of Earth's circumference, and slightly bigger than Mars (Earth = 1, Eberron = 0.64, Mars = 0.53).

"It's a small world after all, It's a small world after all...."

for those who think the "wavy lines" mean something, I would point out that they go outside the borders of the map at the top and bottom. :p

That is true no matter how big or small the planet is. Pittsburgh is both west and east of New York City since you can travel east from NYC and eventually end up in Pittsburgh.
Yeah, but options 1 and 2 were that the world was smaller than ours or that there was something wrong with the map scales. The option I discarded was 3, which was that the world wasn't round.

And for those who keep babbling about how Eberron must have lots of metals or that they should get bonuses to jump... that's just silly. Gravity in D&D is binary. Says so here in my Spelljammer boxed set.

So according to the maps on the inside cover of the ECS Eberron is only 16,000 miles in circumference.
It's small in circumference, but that's primarily because the oceans are small. The continents are HUGE. Khorvaire alone is twice as wide as North America, and it's the smallest continent on the planet.

There are other RPG worlds that seem suspiciously small. Birthright's continent always seemed a wee bit titchy, but that may be because it went only from the arctic to, at best, just barely into the sub-topical bands.

In Birthright's defense, it's only a continent on an entire planet. There's a large body to the south, and appears to be one to the west (which you may see a bit of in Thaele). There're also some big islands to the southwest.

The other neat thing about Cerilia? The mountains do seem to be in realistic places, for the most part; i.e., they sure do seem to suggest plate boundaries.

Hey yeah, didn't notice that. It is about twice as wide east to west, but only half as long north to south. I bet if there was someway to find out square miles of Khorvaire that it would be close to being the same as North America.
