I'm not against 4e coming, but I won't be buying it until "4.5e" happens.

Also, I have own so many published adventures for 3.5 (World's Largest Dungeon, all the Dungeon Crawl Classics, all the post 3.5e Dungeon magazines) that it will probably be at least 2009 - 2010 until I've used 1/4 of them.

I'm fairly sure the actual release will be at either Winter Fantasy 2008 or sometime later that year but before (not at) GenCon, and nearly certain that we will find out at Winter Fantasy 2007. As for when I would buy it, it would depend on a lot of factors. How expensive? How different from 3.5? Are the changes clear improvements? Does it offer anything fundamentally new? How closely tied will it be to DDM? Is there a free alternative such as the 3.5 SRD?

Assuming the answers I currently see as most likely (about the same as now; not radically; a mixed bag, but more "yes" than "no"; no; only a little more than now; no), I could see swinging it as early as next summer, but I don't actually think it will be out until several months after that.

For a lifetime of gaming, I already have the 3.0 core rulebook.

But I bought quite a bunch of supplements just because, so I might end up buying 4e too, probably at least 1 year after its release, so I'm sure to have enough opinion about it.

If it's sufficiently better than 3.0E I'll buy it right away.

Just like 3.5E was better than 3.0E, but since the improvements were marginal I didn't consider upgrading worth the money.

Well, my World's Largest Dungeon game should wrap up sometime in mid 2007. Then I'll run a Savage Tide campaign a few months after that, taking me well into 2009 (online gaming being somewhat on the slow side, I can assume 6-8 sessions per adventure easily), so I voted 2010. I'm simply not going to need anything before then.

Heck, I still haven't bought a 3.5 DMG or Monster Manual. Why would I buy a 4e DMG?

Soonest I would buy it? Today. Why not? This, of course, ASSUMES that it is deemed WORTH buying prior to it ever appearing. Frankly the WHEN of it appearing means absolutely nothing to me. What matters is the substance of the thing and NOT how quickly it will replace the not-as-pure-and-precious-as-people-make-them-to-be 3.5 rules.

I'm with you! If I want it when it's released and I look through it and read some reviews, Iäll buy it. If it's tomorrow or not doesn't matter, it's like buying a new roleplaying game. I'll evaluate it, and if I want it I'll buy it.
