NEVER!

Sorry, I am not moving to a new edition a 2nd time. It was bad enough moving the 1st. I see no reason for a 4E to ever be released, why not simply take advantage of what 3E offers? What can you POSSIBLY do in 4e that you COULD NOT do in 3e without: House Rules, Official Optional Rules, Unearthed Arcana, and 3rd Party Products?

Seriously, can anyone think of that? What is it that none of those offer that warrants a whole new edition?

I'll be honest. I have enough 3.xE books to keep me and my group playing for a good couple of years at the very least. I'd like to say that I wouldn't rush out and buy 4E whenever it is released. However I think be curious to see what they have done with the system (and I'll get caught up in the hype!) so I'll probably buy the core books soon after they are released.

Short Answer: Never.

Long Answer:

I in no way begrudge WotC a 4E release, and I acknowledge that there are several major ways in which the game can be improved.

But I've simply purchased too much 3.5 material to justify scrapping the system and starting over. Ever. I have enough 3.5 material to last me the rest of my life. Easily. I am the dream WotC customer, in that I'm a near-obsessive completist with large amounts of disposable income.

But the idea of 4E breaks that. Shatters it. It's a clean break.

It's similar to my feelings for Shadowrun 4E, in that I've owned every Shadowrun book ever published. It's even worse for 4E, however, because so much of the Shadowrun stuff I own is 90 percent fluff, and perfectly usable in a new system.

Soonest I would buy it? Today. Why not? This, of course, ASSUMES that it is deemed WORTH buying prior to it ever appearing. Frankly the WHEN of it appearing means absolutely nothing to me. What matters is the substance of the thing and NOT how quickly it will replace the not-as-pure-and-precious-as-people-make-them-to-be 3.5 rules.

I wouldn't be so confident that the 3.5 OGL will allow anyone to continue publishing 3.5 material after 4e comes out. The license is granted by WotC. It can be revoked. Or, more likely, updated to 4e material requirements instead.

2010 if not later have way to much tied up in 3e to just ditch it and i like the system and if its more tied into minis ..witch i do not use .. then never if i wanted a wargame i'll play one not d&d

I'm in the "today" camp. I have a pretty sizable collection of 3rd and 3.5 edition stuff, but it wasn't an investment or anything. I enjoyed all my D&D books, but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy new ones.
