The State of ENWorld (too important to go to Meta)

Do you remember the days when publishers used to hang out in the general forum, pimp their books, and chat about their games all the time? Now they mostly stick to the Publishers forum, just posting press releases.

I was looking back at a thread I posted two years ago, and there were about 80 replies over the course of a few days. A similar topic was posted by someone recently, and it got very few replies.

Where is everybody? I miss a lot of the folks we used to have here, and it seems like there's just not as much activity on the boards anymore. Is it because the server keeps going down (and for God's sake guys, can we please just get the new server? Russ, I'll send you $300 if it'll make things go faster, and I'm nearly broke)? Is it because gaming is not on people's minds as much nowadays (which makes no sense, because the boards were still plugging along fine a year after September 11). Am I just reading too much into a slump period?

I just don't see the same fullness of a community that used to be on these boards. Publishers used to love hanging out with everyday gamers, and people seemed to hang on every announcement about something cool from a d20 publisher. Now, maybe people are just more conservative than before, more wary about buying potentially-bad books, but about the only things I see discussed regularly are WotC books. And I know that third-party publishers are trying their damnedest to put out exceptional products, because the market is so hard. I just don't see people getting excited over them anymore.

I suggest we try this: get rid of the D20 Publishers forum as a place of advertisement. Keep it as a place for publishers to discuss the art of publishing, but put advertisements back in General. Encourage them.

We've still got all the same gamers from before -- discussions of games are still great, rules disputes and house rules and storyhours are strong as always -- but to me it feels like we've lost some of the reason why ENWorld reached its height, the ability for normal gamers to talk to publishers, see how they are cool people too, and get to know each other better. I know it's a lot easier for me to buy a book from Mystic Eye because I know Doug Herring and like him, even if we had a few mild arguments.

I want more people to come here. The more friends we have here, the better the community. Think of all the old names you remember, and wonder where they've gone.

Friends, I'm interested to hear how you feel about this.

I don't see it.

On the front page aloneMonte Cook has a thread as does Wulf Ratbane (AKA BadAxe Ben). Andy Collins was on the other day posting about Unearthed Arcana. Joe B. from Exp. Retreat and I engaged in some banter in the art forum. I still see Mystic Eye everywhere. There is a thread about starting up a new RPG company/publisher (God help them):)

Further, if you check out Meta Pirate Cat specifically cited some data that suggests posts are up overall, not down.

And don't forget that Whisperfoot (Steve Creech of Bastion Press) is around regularly.

But RW, I do understand what you're getting at. There are a few folks who used to be regulars that I don't see much anymore. But then, I haven't been around much lately, so maybe I've missed them. But people moving on and new people coming around is the nature of messageboards, I think.

I think Steve's handle is actually Ghostwind. Whisperfoot was another gent who worked for WOTC, and I have not seen him around for quite some time.

I'm glad to see you again Buttercup :)

This is just me, but I think the loss of the Hivemind threads has something to do with it. I know that had nothing to do with the publishers of d20 products being here...but those wacky Hiveminders just seemed to let their effervescence permeate all of the General RPG forum.

Also, the d20 industry has since begun it's winnowing...we recently had a poll asking how much d20 stuff people bought compared to three years ago, and it was majorly down.

Maybe there's not as many new people coming to the boards as there was two years ago also, and when a topic is repeated on the boards, even if the original poster didn't see the first few threads on a topic, some people who are regulars just don't want to state their opinion again and again on the same topic.

It's unfortunate but people sometimes get annoyed by that.

I guess, for me, I have too many 3rd party books I don't ever touch, and I just use the WoTC stuff. I've been excited about a few, and then just gotten burned on how useless the book was to me. After reading reviews here too, no less.

And for me... there's too much news, and way too many third party books coming out for me to pay attention to... so I pay attention to the big ones. I loved Unearthed Arcana, the new Psionics Handbook... I haven't seen much else I've been terribly interested that's not WoTC. That's me at least.

Only thing I miss about the community is that it tends to run a bit caustic occasionally now, but it's still much better than the goofy internet as a whole.

Anyway! I dunno, just my response. It would be good to see more designers talking it up with gamers, but maybe that caustic part has something to do with it?

And just, "it's all been done" syndrome. For me, at least.

Okay, I didn't want to have to do this, but. . . .

I am hereby unveiling D21, a new system that is compatible with D20, but better. We use 21-sided dice, so the rolls are extra random. Though you wouldn't think of it to look at it, that extra side really makes the game a lot more fun.

Balancing the rules was a real pain, though. Whoo-wee.

I'd LOVE to see publishers get a thread in general for an upcoming product. I never go to the Publishers forum. That's for publishers! I'm with RangerWickett. If they posted in general, I might hear about some things before they'd been out oh, say a year...
