Rule zero: the GM is always right.

Which is to say, explaining rules to players isn't necessary, and neither are stupid rules necessary. But the Stupid Rule does assist in Rule Zero's implementation/interpretation.

I have my own similar rule:

You can play any officially printed class/subclass you want, but it's your responsibility to explain how your abilities function within the context of the game world. So yes, you can plan a glamour bard, but it's your responsibility to explain how and why your Mantle of Inspiration consistently translates into temporary hit points. It's magic is not an acceptable answer.
