The terrible TRUTH about American bread!

EDIT: You got that bread from Kroger didn't you? Kroger bread really sucks.
Yeah, Kroger has that French bread. I guess I've been lucky for my area. 2 Fry's within amile of the house, both have AWESOME French bread.

It claimed that on the package. But no actual French baker would dare to serve his customers something like this.
Well, it's obvious when you think about it. When you take bread from France to the USA it becomes pain.

I was the head baker at a grocery store in Louisiana (also remaining unnamed).

It wasn't Roberts, was it?

(For you non-Louisianans, that's pronounced "Row-bares")

I'd hope not!

While I like to buy artisanal breads from small bakeries (of which I know a few), I have noticed that in the D/FW area, more and more groceries are doing better and better breads. A SuperTarget near my small suburb bakes a Roasted Garlic bread with whole cloves. My local Tom Thumb does a decent (though not San Francisco quality) Sourdough.

We're also starting to see more places around here do Shiner Bock beer bread- like Eatzis, Central Market and (I believe) Whole Foods.

The odd thing is, though, the Vietnamese bakers. They all learned french baking (however could that have happened?), so many Vietnamese groceries around here have quite nice baguettes & croissants of various sizes and flavors. However, its almost exclusively in their groceries- the stand-alone bakers are spending most of their time making pastries.

That's really common in Houston, too. Is it really surprising? Vietnam was a French colony. Or did I miss sarcasm?

Yeah- I was trying out a bit of sarcasm.

There ought to be some kind of "Sarcasm" editing button, dagnabbit!

Another thing we love going to the Vietnamese for is fresh seafood from the Gulf. A whole bunch of them settled in Galveston after the Vietnam War (and other costal Texas cities)- there was even a movie about it- and took up fishing like in the mother country.

These days, I can get fresh Gulf seafood (some even live!) every Tuesday and Friday. Quite the find for someone who primarily cooks Creole cuisine and variants on the theme.
