Could an American write Doctor Who? - Babylon 5 creator throws hat in the ring

I think he might…but most likely only as a little inside joke. The man does have a sense of humor.

He has a sense of humor.

But he's also been trying to get another similar project off the ground since before the pandemic, and is unlikely to lightly use anything that might tie rights up in weird ways.

That was the whole schtick for the Third Doctor, played by John Pertwee. As much as I'd love more hanging out with contemporary UNIT, I'm not sure the audience would be there for that.

The original was a nice frame for conventional forces dealing with unconventional threats. Modern UNIT is itself kind of super-powered, such that it loses its ability to broaden out the kinds of stories they can tell.

... As my username in other places is actually Dalek Kosh, I feel very seen.

My general feedback on the Disney era of Doctor Who can best be described as "Aww, RTD is back on his usual naughty word (Complementary)" to "Oof, RTD is back on his usual naughty word (derogatory)". So I'm not really into getting more from RTD ... or Moffatt or Chibnall, tbh. I do think Doctor Who needs a new showrunner/head writer.

I like JMS, Babylon 5 and Sense8 a lot, but I'll confess I'm not sure it's the best fit. Still, I'd be there to watch if it happens.

Our Superman was a Brit, Our Batman was a Brit, our Spider-Man is a BRIT. All of these characters are very American. Peter is a kid from Forest Hills, Queens, for chrissakes. So an American behind the scenes, writing a character that they intimately know the lore for? I don't see the problem.
Writing something is very different from later portraying what was written. An actor can do a very good job at carrying off the appearance of a character (Tom Holland as Spider-Man), or can screw it up completely (Kevin Costner as Robin Hood), but the writing first needs to be there.

I once played Japanese video game that was primarily about a U.S. President. Within the first fifteen minutes after selecting "New Game", he:
  • ...is blown clean out of his limo by a nuclear weapon striking the city he's in.
  • ...is whisked away to a fantasy world where he is de-aged to about his early 20's
  • ...immediately involves himself in protecting a cat-boy prince in the middle of a coup led by sword-wielding rat people
  • ...begins fully merking said swordsrat-people with his modern semi-auto pistol

It seems like a bad plan, is what I'm saying.
