The Transporter

I hyped it some time ago in this thread shortly after the trailer came out. Well, I've finally gotten around to seeing THE TRANSPORTER.

Pretty solid little action movie, and well worth the rent if you like your HK-flavored incredible action. Unstoppable one-man army versus an ocean of mooks, a few heavy-hitters. Lots of kung fu, guns, stunts, explosions. Jason Statham is pretty damned good in his role as the one-man army in question. He plays an interesting character (that loses some layers after the second act) and looks the part of the absolutely cool guy you do not aim a gun at.

Some nice choreography, and some very clever stuff, including a brilliant scene involving improvising when there's oil everywhere and a nice scene in a bus. One pretty decent chase scene early on, and a great one later that suffered for having ripped off RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK a little less than shamelessly. The first chase has a terrific moment on a bridge that pleased my inner GM greatly. I hadn't seen a good car chase since I rented Jackie Chan's WHO AM I? a few years back, so this was welcome. Ahhh.

The last time I got all hyped for a decent looking action trailer that I later rented was THE MUSKETEER... which turned out to be maybe the worst piece of crap I ever thought could be halfway non-crappy. THE TRANSPORTER kinda put things to right with me. As Hong Kong action-style movies that aren't from China go, this one's way up at the top.

I give the official Doc Midnight recommendation: if you can love a movie for its action- or incredibly attractive female lead- I think you'll like it. Go throw down some rent dollars, punk, and stay out of my way until I remember I'm an overweight, underfit american... which will be sometime tonight, maybe nine-ish. Till then I'm DEADLY I TELL YOU.

Wasn't a bad flick... But that's what it definetly is, a "flick"... A couple of the scenes were just a bit TOO incredible, even for a movie of that sort... The flying through the truck window, for example.

Did you see The Bourne Identity? Great car chase scene...

I thought it was okay as a "bad action flick" but... that's all.

*sigh* Will anyone ever make another action film to rank up with Hard Boiled and The Killer?

I still have to (and plan to) see The Bourne Identity.

I did, actually, but I don't remember much about it. I remember thinking it was good, but I can't remember much else... didn't stand out to me as extraordinary, I think.

I dunno, I kinda think those two have been outdone a couple of times, at least in the action sense. I can't quite figure out why people cling to them.

The Transporter gets a 8.5 for general coolness. Seri and I watched it and neither of us had any major problems with the action or plot.

Ever see the short films BMW put out on the web a year or two ago? They hired 4 (5?) rather famous directors to make short (7-8 minute long) action films featuring BMW cars. Del toro, Ang Lee and Guy Ritchie were three of the directors, unfortunately I can't remember the 4th.

I especially recommend Guy Ritchie's short, "Star". Must be nice to be married to Madonna.

It is a movie that is what it says it is. So, many movies are about the star, or loose themselves in being something they are not, action or love story, action or comdy. The Transported was a good action movie, good story and flow.

I liked it.

Yeah, I thought it was fine. Money's worth, anyway. Statham impressed me mightily -- if he wants a career as an action hero he's definitely got it.

Some idiot bits but what are you going to do? It's made by Frenchmen.

The original set of BMW films were made by John Frankenheimer, Ang Lee, Guy Ritchie, a documentary film-maker whose name escapes me, and the never-to-be-outdone Wong Kar Wai, who did The Follow for BMW which was unfortunately taken off the Net because of contract issues with some of the actors (who'd signed up for a limited availability run and couldn't find an agreement for the more general release that BMW decided on later. Did that make sense?).

The Follow is the only one that actually suceeds as an artistic work, I think. I know that sounds horribly snobbish, but it's true.

I saw this for free at a special engagement and I still was not happy with it. There were just too many things that I didn't like like and I found the ending to be silly since they didn't rescue everyone, but no one seemed to notice that.
