The ultimate guide to D&D?

No offense but I think you are taking it a little too seriously. D&D for Dummies is exactly what a lot of people need. Not to learn the game but to remind themselves that it is a game and we need new blood playing it!

YOU PLAY FRIGGIN D&D.

Yup. But "gamer cool" is not the same as "street cool", "hanging around in the bar cool" or "high-school clique cool". (LOL)

Coolness is not monolithic...

I don't think it's a bad idea at all. In fact I like it. I've got Dummies books for Linux, Unix, and 3 for C programming (I also have the Waite (?) book). I think they're great.

As far as D&D goes it sounds like a great introduction for a total newbie. I've had a Dummies like cheat sheet for character creation and it has been a tremendous help for new players.

Hopefully it will have something in it that addresses the D&D hysteria and ignorance that seems to have reared its ugly head in the media again.

And an index!

And it's only $20.00 (US).

Then again, WotC has had some great April Fools jokes in the past.

The 'for dummies' and 'idiots guide' books are actually very good. For a vietnam history class in school we used the "Idiot's Guide to Vietnam". I wouldn't have a problem with anyone getting this book (paticuarly if they are a new player). However a DM should know the rules well enough not to need this book.

No, it isn't necessary. So? Does that make it automatically a bad idea?

Obviously most of the people on these boards will have little or no use for it - but really, there are billions of things I have little or no use for, and I still think they are good things.

I am thinking of suggesting it to my cousin. She is new to the game and sometimes we don't explain the rules too well. If any one gets the book please post a review.

Okay, as I said before, getting new blood into the game is fine, my angst revolves around this cheesy title directed at the mass-market. Looks desparate in some way to me, stooping to this strategy -- we have a hard enough time already getting respect for our hobby, I do not think a title like this helps...

That is why I recoil in horror. (Yeah I like to use dramatic prose  )

-W, wondering if there's anyone on his side? :heh:

I'm with Henry on this one. I would like to get this for my fiance. The only games I can get her to play are board games, and even then she does so only grudgingly because she's worried about all the rules she'd have to learn. Something like this may ease her mind about playing RPG's with me (she's scared by the vast amounts of rulebooks that I have), and even if she doesn't play she'd at least be able to understand me when I talk about gaming.
