The Wandmaker Patron

What was the theme you had in mind when picking the expanded spell list?
I mostly just based them on what a Harry Potter character can do.

Also, the 1st level feature is super-weak. I could just but an arcane focus on the shape of a wand and get the same benefit.

Edit: no, it's worse than that. An arcane focus is already part of the warlock's default starting gear. All this feature grants me is that it only works for me. Is that ever gonna matter?
It acts as a foci regardless of class, but that doesn't help outside of multiclassing.
You're right that it's weak. I'm considering having it able to be summoned as a free action, so you can never be disarmed, but would that be enough? I don't want to put too much power into it, because it gains quite a bit of power later?

That makes sense.

That still wouldn't be enough for me to ever consider taking this.

I'd be tempted by an additional predetermined cantrip known (available only while holding the wand). Specifically thaumaturgy. It's one of that fun cantrips, but not normally available to warlocks so I'd be getting something unique to this patron without adding anything if great power.

I like that idea! It would be super-flavorful. But I'd substitute prestidigitation for thaumaturgy, as it seems closer to what Potterverse wizards do on a regular basis. (I know warlocks can already choose prestidigitation, but you could get it for free this way.) Heck, even allowing both might not be too powerful, since they're both basically roleplay cantrips. Or maybe choose one at level 1 and add the second at level 3.

Yeah, Prestidigitation is definitely more Harry Potterish, and I was about to suggest it as the one to give, but then the warlock can already choose it if they want, and I figured the subclass should get something unique.

Thaumaturgy is at least a bit Gandalfian ( his momentarily terrifying visage terrifying Frodo early in the tale)

Yeah, I edited in a sentence above about potentially making it free, thereby giving the warlock an extra spell slot to choose a different cantrip.

Yes, true, which is why I like getting both.

How about this? At level 1, you get prestidigitation for free. At level 3, you add thaumaturgy. Both are only available when holding the wand, unless the warlock chooses to expend a cantrip choice on prestidigitation.

If I was gonna give them both, I'd just give them both at 1st level for simplicity.

. . . And I think I would give them both. I've been waffling on whether that would be too much, but this Warlock might as well get both.
