Steve Buscemi would be my first choice.

Y'know, TB, that's a mighty fine piece of casting!

I wonder how they'll handle (hehe) Dr. Manhattan... :)

Neither grubby, grim nor violent enough (and yes, I've seen him in Seven)
I don't know. Just because he hasn't accepted such a role doesn't mean he's incapable of it. I have great respect for Spacey as an actor. I could definitely see him as Rorschach. Though it'd be new ground for him, I feel that he's certainly got the chops to handle it.

I see the casting of Rorschach as the key to making this project work or fail, but it all comes down to the voice. His journal was such a key element of the comic that I think we need a great voice for it, to narrate the tale. And since he is masked that means that we need somebody who is great with voice-over work, not necessarily acting. I would also shy away from having a voice that is so immediately recognized (Steve Bushemi, Gary Sinese, etc.) that it would be a distraction.

Oooh, I really hope they don't change the backstory--part of what makes Watchmen so fascinating is how solidly it's grounded in Cold War paranoia. At the same time, they may have to change it.

I'm intrigued, but not exactly optimistic.
And I'm not sure Buscemi is scary or macho enough to be Rorschach, though he's a great comic actor. I say they go all out and get Keanu Reeves.

Just kidding. I think I'd rather they cast an unknown in the part.

I see Jude Law more as Ozymandias.

Given that Samuel L. Jackson is such a comic book fan there must a role for him somewhere in Watchmen.

Actually he or Lawrence Fishburn would be terrific as Dr. Manhattan. They are both so good at just standing there and making you feel uneasy and menaced with out actually doing anything menacing. A crucial skill for Dr. Manhattan.

Overall though the thought of a Watchman movie makes me uneasy with regards to the likely outcome. Alan Moore's books haven't faired well at the hands of Hollywood and Watchmen would be one of the most difficult to adapt given the structure of the story, the extensive supporting materials that aren't integrated into the plot and the many interleaving plot threads that lurk in the background, yet never get lost in the main story.

Jude Law though is simply too much of a pretty boy to make a good Rorschach. Night Owl sure. He might make a good Ozymandius.
