The way my party finds out which sword is better... legal?

Legal?

The way they are using works like everyone has said it is just very limited.
I agree give a few cursed items and that will change their minds.

I used the old method of iding items in an 2e game years ago and my Elven Ranger got a ring of contariness that he thought had other powers. Taught me to get stuff ided before using them (once I got free of that annoying curse).
However, playing character with a good intelligence I keep the ring and put to great effect at making friends out of enemies. I'd grapple an opponent and put the ring on them and get them to do the opposite...worked great at getting them to stop attacking me, tell me things etc. Then I would get the ring removed with the help of a NPC Cleric follower (the character's wife) and use it again the next time it was needed, all the while keeping the previous as a friend though lots of roleplaying. My character didn't kill unless they are evil and unredeemable.

Cursed items should do the trick....Give a ring of contariness that glows bright and acts a ring of protection or something as well, set back and watch the fun.

I've used this in my current campaign and a it was a blast..though the party didn't let the last too long, they just had a difficult time controlling the cleric to get the ring off him since it was a ring of spell-turning-Contariness and he was really into playing the curse. Since this time they don't let any character use any item until they have had time to id it properly. If identify doesn't work they will use Analze Dweomer. (Still using 3.0 but with variant rules for idenify and AD).
