I just noticed this on Amazon

and i am finding it to be very interesting, with my innate love of the Shadowfell, but i am wary of the tokens (which i feel to be nice, but a tad superfluous) and these "cards" which are supposed to make the game more interesting, lending the game to have some gamma world type mechanics, or would you say its more gimmicky? I am assuming they are the digest size, which is not too bad but I need to find a new shelf to store these.

We have known about this for a while.

Box sets with stuff are how we will be getting this stuff, for the known future.

Hmmmm. Yeah, too bad. I have a nice collection of 4e fluff books. I'd definitely like to have one on this subject, but I really don't need a boxed set and gew-gaws, nor is it super exciting that it would be a softcover unlike all the other ones on my shelf.

I mean softcovers are fine, and boxed sets are fine, but really why do I need a boxed set for a reference book? Core rules in softcover format like the RC etc? Yah! Maybe if ALL the 4e stuff had been this format to start I'd be cool with it for reference books as well, but the transition is a bit annoying.

I definitely agree, in my case i have a bookshelf perfectly proportioned for the hardcovers, so its going to be a pain to get everything to fit and still be slightly symmetrical (or at least stay up, the softcovers dont like to stand without a bookend sometimes)

The real question is about the cards. I was wondering about is whether or not its going to be simply a way to randomly encounter "something dark and wierd" or an actual game type mechanic

What I have found with the box of Dungeon Tiles is that the box itself is the same height as the hard cover books, and it looks just fine along a bookshelf. I think the Gamma World Box (which I don't own) is a different dimension, but the Dungeon Master's Kit (which I also don't own) box looks the same as the tiles.
Plus leaving the paperback books in the box helps preserve the book cover.

Count me as someone who loves the boxed sets! :)

Nostalgia for one thing, but also the fact that with the boxed sets they've been able to add new ideas/mechanics (ie the cards) and with the tokens the instant usability at my table increases.

I can now, go to the store, buy a "box full o monsters" and have not only the stats, but something to represent that monster in game. No more waiting for the right mini to be produced, or hunting one down, or hoping someone gets tokens out soon. It's all just there in the box, ready to go.

I've never been one to really care if my bookshelf looks orderly or not.

We don't have a lot of knowledge about them, but at one of the Gencon seminars they mentioned them... Sounded like they would be optional rules, similar to the twitter buffs, and fate cards coming out... But kind of the opposite like adding a little horror/insanity to the game.
