Bungie once again is an independent company! No longer enslaved by the Dark Lords of Redmond! Rejoice!

Microsoft only bought them to stop them from releasing Halo to the wider public and instead making it the flagship game for the X-Box (Long after the computer version should have come out). It makes sense that they are no longer interested now that the Halo series is done.

My suspicion is more that the guys at Bungie were never really happy as Microserfs. So since the value of a company like Bungie is almost all in the people and once Halo 3 came out as the last game in the series they said "Look, you can either let us go peacefully, now that we've fulfilled what you bought us for and our contractual period is up. Or we can all just quit and go form a new company." I'd be surprised (though not shocked) if it was Microsoft behind the severing of ties.

Well- MS is still a minority share-holder in Bungie, so the ties haven't really been severed.

This just means Bungie doesn't have to be all Halo all the time.

It reminds me a lot of the old Rare/Nintendo relationship.

In a way, Bungie is now a sort of 2nd party developer for MS.

Yeah.

I also think Bungie traded Halo away to MS for their independence. As I read the story at GS, MS will be "continuing the Halo franchise".

Did anybody here play the Marathon trilogy back in the day? Those games were awesome. A friend of mine described them to me as "Doom with a plot," though that description doesn't really do them justice. They really were ahead of their time, IMO.

Yup, got all of them including the Marathon Trillogy Box. Marathon Evil (a fan created mod) was actually my favorite of the bunch. Among other things, it let you use the Pfhor Staff weapon. Myth I & II are my favorite games by them though.
