D&D 5E Thievery in 5e - still relevant?

I woukd still do 2xp for rogues. It's a buff which they need without rewriting the class.
Oh ok. In my preferred game (ACKS) thief skills have been reworked so thieves are more competent, and the more egregious ways mages show them up have been curtailed.

I read ACKsliterally 30 minutes ago.

Thief success rate is still dsirly terrible its just a d20 roll vs %.
18 or higher on a lot of skills around 50/50 lvl 9ish.

I woukd have to check side by side but it's not a great change. They do get a cleave type ability.

ACKs they do get proficiency abilities but every class does.

They put a lot of work into that issue throughout the last few years, and have made substantial improvements in the new edition. I'm sorry, I am using the updated rules from Patreon (Kickstarter isn't up yet) and also have access to the rule updates in Axioms (quarterly supplement) where those rules were developed, but obviously not everyone has all the supplements. My apologies.

Also, thieves get a substantial bonus to their success by taking a bit more time to work the skill, and can get bonuses from other factors as well.

Variable advancement tables for the different classes serves the same purpose, only in a more tune-able way.

I'm aware in real terms the thief us a level or to ahead.

I remember a thief got 3 or 4 levels ahead and that thief didn't suck.

Which counters the Thieves suck thoughts of them pre 3E.

Everyone else was in the sweet spot that thief hit name level (guild rules in thief handbook.

Of course all the Suggestions in the Books were optional in D&D before 3E.
Hm? Sorry, not sure what you mean. 3e had lots of optional suggestions, like this one, from the DMG:

Back in the Time Before Time, the all the text in the books were suggestions. This was written right into the "rules" : the "rules" told you the "rules" did not need to be followed to play the game.

Sort of. When we started 2E we has only played B/X and the DM did not use the gold for xp rule. Took us a year to hit level 4.

It was really only in late 2E adventures the xp awards were generous. I tried the optional rules for xp but it was a lot of book keeping for the effort.

Except on rogues it was kinda hilarious. Fighter you get a thousand xp, cleric cast these spells you get a few hundred, wizard something similar. Loot is 8k rogue you get 16000xp.

Think the wizard got salty when the bard had more spells than they did.

5E has milestone leveling. If I play 2E again I'll just use milestone xp.
