Thieves' World Magic System

I never really knew about TW besides a few mentions in various threads here and there. And then, suddenly, Thieves' World Players Manual is given to me as one of the Christmas gifts I can touch prior to the actual Christmas day. I started reading it, and I really like what I read.

I have a question regarding the magic system though. Has anyone around here played it in an actual game? What can you tell me about the way it plays out?

I'm asking because the rules of mana pools mean high level spells take virtually forever to cast. Then, doesn't it suck the balance out of the spellcasting classes? At least that's what it looks like to me. Am I wrong? Why?

Ta!

I'm with you on really liking this game as well. I've been a big fan of the setting since the series (the anthology) started, and between this Conan/Freeport/Black Company I'm finally fantasy setting heaven :D

We've just started to play w/ it ourselves, and yea it can take forever to cast spells. My players have started to prep spells a lot more often to be all to pull them off sooner, and using more of the spellcasting tactics when needing to cast in a hurry and ect.. But it's still a bit early for us to tell so far the spellcasters seem to be holding their own and proving their worth.

I had this impression upon browsing through it that the magic system has a lot of similarities to the one presented in Sovereign Stone d20. Anybody who can comment on that? :)
