[Thieves' World] Murder at the Vulgar Unicorn

“Well I guess we should head back to the Unicorn, it seems the best place to start.” Carvar says to the others. “Maybe someone there knows who the man on the balcony was. Unless someone has a better idea where to start?” He asks the others.

Cira stands in the morning air, glad to be out of the stuffy cell. The sunny sky is a welcome sight after the rain of days past, and she breathes deeply as the others discuss the plan, nodding in reply to Carvar's suggestion. "Memories are short when it comes to details. If anything was seen, it will be forgeotten soon. Best to ask now." Her voice is quiet and the accent makes her a bit difficult to hear over the bustle of morning traffic.

"Hmmm... I agree that the Unicorn is probably the best place to start, however, I doubt the barkeep will be happy to see me since I made a bit of a mess of the place. I need to get cleaned up anyhow. Maybe I can meet you all there later? I'll also check with someone I know who may have knowledge of this gang...."

[sblock]OOC: Toric, is it OK if we split up or would you rather everyone stays together? I'm thinking about having Kadramis check with a Priestess of Heqt about the gang's affiliations (a contact that he knows).[/sblock]

Daeric strectches taking in the morning sun as he looks at his former cellmates.

"Yes, I think the sooner we start back at the Unicorn the better. Have any of you ever heard of this group the Silent Brothers before?
"Kadramis, if you want to change, that's up to you. But be careful asking about those Brothers as most groups around here don't appreciate folk looking into their business, and a man alone makes too easy of a target if they feel the need to eliminate you. Also, if you are going to be inquiring around on your own perhaps you'll heed a little advice. The folk of Sanctuary have their own pride and don't take kindly to patronizing or arrogance. The Empire no longer holds power here. Try to be a bit more diplomatic and don't call anyone a Wrigglie unless you are wanting to get into a fight."

Daeric then turns and leads the others towards the Maze and the Unicorn continuing the conversation as he walks.

"Well, I guess I'll toss out my plan to go door-to-door asking for the Silent Brotherhood," he called sarcastically after the retreating Sanctan. Sheesh. He may not have made the wisest decisions, but he wasn't stupid. And a motley crew like that, walking around making inquiries, would be more discreet than a single person?

Hm. The Wriggly thought he was arrogant? Sure the Rankene Empire may not hold sway over the city like they used to, but the pud was fooling himself if he thought Rankene held no power here. Who did he think lived in all those estates at Land's End? There were still plenty of Rankene in high positions in this town, though unfortunately Kadramis didn't know any of them. Maybe he'd have to make some contacts at some point...

He turned on his heel and headed for the bazaar, following the walls around the old governor's palace to avoid the Maze entirely.

OOC: Sorry this took so long...

IC:
Other than the brief exchange between Kadramis and Daeric, the trip back to the Vulgar Unicorn is carried out in silence. The streets are full of pedestrians on a much nicer day than the previous one. While yesterday there was a near constant rain, today is sunny and warm, a light breeze blowing off the water keeping it from getting too uncomfortable.

It takes you a good half an hour to find the Unicorn after entering the Maze, despite having been there a mere fifteen hours ago. The Maze can confound even those with a nose for direction.

Oddly, the Unicorn is virtually deserted, despite being nearly noon when you arrive. Maybe the murder of the previous night is enough to keep people away? Pegrin, the bartender, is behind the bar when the group of you enter the tavern. He was present last night as well. Pegrin is a Wrigglie, in his late twenties or early thirties, and ugly with many scars. He is also obviously blind in one eye.

The only patron in the place sits at a table farthest from the entrance. He is a Wrigglie of average height and weight with short, dark blond hair and a mustache and goatee. He seems to study you as you enter, his piercing gray-blue eyes somewhat unnerving.

OOC: Okay Lars, that's your queue. Feel free to introduce Derleth in your first post.

Carvar enters the Unicorn and walks towards the bar noting the only patron studying the group. Standing next to the bar and looking intimidating Carvar waits for one of the others to question Pegrin, believing one of the others may be more skilled at investigating then he would be. He listens carefully to what Pegrin says trying to determine if he is being honest.

OOC: Using Sense motive +5 on Pergrin as he answers questions.

Cira walks in as though nothing were different than any other day, sitting at a table where she can see both the stranger and the bar. She notes Carvar's careful stance with approval, but she can't help but smile slightly. That barkeep doesn't seem to be the type that can easily be intimidated. Not by a grim expression, anyhow. She slowly pulls her dagger from its sheath, setting it atop her thigh under the table. Better safe than slow, Dovinus always said.

Daeric walks into the Unicorn and over to the bar noting the lack of patronage at such a normally busy time. His eyes never stop scanning the room as he leans on one end of the bar.

"Hey, Pegrin. Quite an interesting little event last night, eh? Never seen the Unicorn so dark as it was when that wind blew in.
"Where are all your noontime patrons? Don't tell me the Guard has you shut down over that little tiff."
