Things I LIKE about Mongoose

Second Chance

Hm... this is an encouraging thread. Back when I was just getting into D20 there was a lot of Mongoose product on the shelves. I have a good relationship with several FLGS and so I was allowed to sit down and read over several Quint books and some Slayers Guides... I really disliked them. I then had a few conversations with the store managers in different places that reinforced this opinion, and of course these boards reinforced that opinion further. I then swore off Mongoose completely and (thought) that I was done with them forever. I even told my friends to avoid them (and being their GM they actually listen to me).

Then I discovered Sheoloth on my shelf this morning. I purchased it without realizing that I had bought a MGP product. Reading over it I’ve found it... uninspiring. I wouldn't burn it mind you, I don't get the same sinking feeling with it that I did with the Slayer books or the Quints... it’s just not exciting me. However Mongoose Matt did say that the company so disliked this product that they burned all their extra copies, so he was open and honest about it. Matt also spent a great deal of effort discussing the core changes that the company has gone through in a different thread on this board, and the comments here in this thread make me wonder if perhaps its not time to give the company a second look... in spite of Sheoloth and the Quints.

There is a copy of Strongholds and Dynasties in the bargain bin at the nearest FLGS. I will go pick it up after I post this thread. Both reviews on Enworld give it 4 stars and it's been recommended in this thread once.

So Matt, this is me giving Mongoose a second chance. :) Plus I've agreed to play in a friends Paranoia game in a few weeks.

Never can have enough Lone Wolf. If anyone is running a PBP or PBEM and needs a player let me know;)

Besides that
Quint Monk(good for some customizing of Monk Core Class)
Encyclopedia Arcana: Crossbreeding(a favorite subject of mine)
Slayers Guide To Dragons

PDFs

One of the things I've liked about Mongoose is that they've really supported the PDF market and thanks to that a couple books that never would have see print have been produced.

Other books I've really liked
Quint Rogue I and II
Slayer's Guide to Trolls
Quint Paladin

And I'm planning on picking up OGL Horror when I'm not broke. :)

Could someone provide a link to the other thread? I'm just curious to see what all the hubbub is about.

Here ya go: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=127605

I just finished reading it myself, and while not a huge MGP fan, I find Mongoose_Matt's comments to be professional and they've convinced me to take a look at their new products (and as soon as Amazon gets Paranoia XP SP1 I'll be all over it like white on rice).

Mongoose does cover a lot of different subjects (which is probably why I have close to 20 of their products, in many cases, no other company covered it. Or a company I liked even less than Mongoose). So that's a plus.

Some of their products are actually really good. OGL Ancients, despite needing about 30-40 more pages, is brilliant. Conan, other than the editing, I liked. Slaine was very cool.

Commentary on closed thread removed - Sorry Darrin, but it stood a good chance of reopening the closed thread here, and that isn't something we want to do. I've saved a copy of the deleted text in case you want to post it elsewhere - Plane Sailing

Matt, my hat's off to you for being so professional and open about this. Just remember that the tall trees catch the most breeze. There are a number of people who really like what your company has become and are completely in your corner. I am one of them.

It's never too late :)

Drop Mark a line at mhumphries@mongoosepublishing.com, and he will sort you out!

That's good to know - I'm not running Conan currently but I'm a Son of Cimmeria (yes, I mailed in the corner!) and I might want to run Conan again later & upgrade my copy of Conan: Spellb.ooks to to Conan: Atlantean. How much does it cost me - £12?
