Things that should not be said

Just cus their all evil hearted doesn't mean you can't have a nice little talk with the frost giant chief. Apparently talking, non - intimidated, 200 plat giving, food was a novety.

IMC, if he followed through Pelor would be quite upset. Murder, a planned killing is an evil act, and the good god would be angry that a follower used divine guidance before committing such an act. At the start of the next day, the paladin would probably lose one of their unique abilities (detect evil or lay on hands) as a lesson for 24 hours.

The paladin, should be given a dream to send a message that defending the innocent or smiting an evil creature is acceptable, not assisination for convenience sake.

So let me get this straight. Frost Giants are evil, so if you just happen across them and slaughter a couple of them in battle, it's smiting evil, so Pelor's well-pleased. But if you plan out an attack on evil Frost Giants for the following day, that's a planned killing and Pelor takes away your powers?

I kinda see where dren is coming from, though. A planned, honorable assault on the Frost Giants would be in the clear. But I think the use of underhanded assassination-style (or "gangland killing") of the Frost Giants would be bad form for a paladin.

I dont think the act of using poison in it self is evil, just the tactic would be considered dishonorable to a paladin.

Most paladins tend to shy away from poison as it is an unfair tactic. There may be allowable exceptions, such as poisoning a well to stop a frost giant army, but they should be very rare exceptions.

I think the key question here is exactly what is behind the character's statements. If the frost giants had just sacked a village, then there may be no reasonable expectation of a parley. If they are just in the frost giant's territory, some negotiations might be possible. (It may or may not be in the frost giant chief's interest to share the information with the party. If the information is about a mutual threat, the frost giant chief may wish to have the party deal with it -- hopefully dying after completing their task.)

Good to see you on the boards, dagger!

Actions and deeds are the important item here, saying is not doing and while that is a fine line it is one. Sure it is going to happen but then it is done and it is a planed act of murder UNLESS something happens like "I asked them to give up and repent." :) The paladin in my games hated that, bad guy defeated about to die, throws down his weapons, and says he has seen the error of his ways, repents and will take what ever punshment the court lays down for him. Whole side adventure of the paladin protecting the villian and slowly turning to the dark side.

Define evil in your game, forest gaint is a defined evil. discussing killing and doing it are not evil acts against defined evil creatures.
